I have a 4 year gap on my resume while I traded full time. I'm in Australia so can't trade any more. What would you put on your cv for that time?

My kid's school think I'm a sports investment analyst but I suppose it depends what sort of job you're going for which will dictate what aspect of trading you want to emphasise.
As a general rule though, I'm a big fan of truth, as it is more likely to lead to a move towards your strengths.

Here are some suggestions:
unemployed
gentleman of leisure
self-unemployed
professional gambler (only applicable if you drive around in an old rolls royce, sporting expensive 70s apparel and smoking a big fat one).
professional trader (only applicable if you wear a stripy blazer).

Yep, just explain what you do.  We take it for granted but making a living trading on a gambling website is pretty impressive.

Why does being in Australia mean you can't trade any more?

Turnover charge? Is that an Aussie government decision?

On Aussie markets that is. Too much latency to the UK to try those markets.

Glad you mentioned the latency. I've noticed the delay trying to bet on Oz markets from UK. Though the delay seems to be mainly in cancelling money.

As for your question, I liked the self-employed sports investment analyst answer.

I'd mention the money you made and the skills you needed to make it.  like self motivation, determination, analytical skills, software skills, judgement, discipline, nerve, reactng positiely in a fast paced and very competitive environment etc etc.

Thanks, The Jonker, I'd never heard of the turnover charge before.

Thanks Clyde, that's helpful.

Yeah Darlo, the cancelling bets bit is a killer, especially on the UK markets which are even more fast paced than the Aussie ones. Even if I manage to get a few of my trades off ok I inevitably end up getting getting screwed so badly that it wipes out all my previous profitable trades. The fact that the UK markets are so much more competitive makes being at that sort of disadvantage so much harder as well.

You still can't do any inplay trading in Australia, is that correct ?
If not, when did that change ?

You can bet still in play on horse racing but I think that is subject to the turnover charge. With the exception of racing you can't bet on Aussie sports online, you have to call up so all those in play markets are pretty dead.

Turnover charges /tax stifles low margin operators.

On the on hand it seems the most idiotic tax there is, because it penalises and puts out of business the most efficient operators.

On the other hand it may be a deliberate action to keep margins high (like is the case for state lotteries for example, where lack of competition keeps margins ridiculously high, this has a similar effect).

The so called "Robin Hood tax" proposals are by the rich for the rich http://robinhoodtax.org.uk/.

It's presented as taking a few extra pennies from those greedy bankers so they pay their fair share. What actually happens with a tax on turnover is that the established elite are protected from new more efficient entrants.

Anyhow back to topic with some more serious advice: I'd say if you go for plenty of interviews, you'll probably find one or two people who are impressed rather than suspicious.

However, be prepared to answer the obvious question: how come you had to give up the betting business? (Geographical limitations are not an excuse).

What sort of jobs are you looking to apply for if you don't mind me asking. Do they have any connection to the betting industry.

Not looking for anything connected to the betting industry U.A. I don't know anything about horse racing and I don't particularly like sport.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

The Jonker, I'm pretty sure that you cd trade currencies or bonds or metals w/ the same success.

TheInvestor, the turnover tax is pure protectionism for the reasons you give. In Oz it is especially blatant, given the ownership of the TABs. Maybe a govt. has a shadow of a case in saying that they want to protect employment.

As far as I can tell you have 2 approaches. You can either apportion that time as being used to gain some kind of life experience i.e. things like traveling or some kind of voluntary work. Although 4 years is quite a long time for this unless its something like having children.

The other is to say that you are self employed and say that you are some kind of data analysis researcher or something a bit jazzy like that. If the jobs you are going for are nothing to do with betting, then they may not want too much information about this and you can enlighten them in the interview, but at least by that stage you have made it to the interview stage.

Remember if you get to interviews and they ask you why you stopped what you are doing, it's not because of geographic location prohibiting you it's because your looking to forge some career in what ever you are being interviewed for or something positive like that.

Half the battle is getting into the actual interview, so you need to be a bit creative.

Some strong advice...
As you are not going for a job in this industry, do not mention trading on Betfair.
You'll be surprised the amount of negative aura which surrounds betting, gambling or even trading.
That coupled with the fact you are now seeking employment, sends a very negative message to those that have no understanding.
A freelance market analyst in the financial industry is a far more attractive title, yet still honest.
You need to think ahead about how you will answer questions, as any hesitation at interview stage will read like a lie.

You could probably write that you earned a living sitting around in your underpants all day. It wouldn't be lying and you may even score a job with a modelling company.
