Does anyone know of any way I can do this as a UK resident - short of flying to Australia and opening a bank account there? All firms so far have refused to let me nominate a third party in Oz and have a cheque sent to them.

I don't think there is a way as the lack of responses demonstrates.  It recently cost me £127 in charges/exchange rate costs on an average  transfer in and out of approx £2000 into US$ and back again.

Can't you just open an online account with an Austrailian based bank? I once tried it with Canadian bank. They didn't say no but they did ask a lot of questions such that I didn't bother.

Yep it's a nightmare. Charges to send the money in the first place, then charges to get it back out again since they wont let me nominate a third party in Oz to collect a cheque. At least they take a decent sized wager over there. Put our lot to shame in fact.
