You may have seen my thread about the old Betfair site having page loading issues and my other one regarding the new site leaving a lot to be desired. All the issues contained in these threads have given me the final push I needed to get into the world of API (Application Programming Interface). In particular, Gruss Software's 'Betting Assistant' (commonly referred to as 'Gruss').
http://www.gruss-software.co.uk/
This thread is for those like me who spend quite a bit of time on Betfair - despite my start date, to all intents and purposes I've only been on here for 3 years - but have next to no idea about technology, let alone software programming.
Needless to say, the fact I'm only now opening up an account with Gruss means my betting on here has been nothing other than basic. I'm fully aware there are plenty of other methods of making money, but I've been content doing my own thing and earning enough to make it worthwhile. This thread won't be anything other than how to use Gruss as a replacement for Betfair, not a thread on using advanced trading techniques.
My gut feeling is Betfair want people like me (and you) to use API software (I'm not sure of the exact terminology) instead of using their site.
I know a few others are thinking of following suit, and hopefully this thread will allow us to hold hands as we commence our adventure.
I've opened my Gruss account and my first impression is that there's a lot of stuff I'm going to need to learn! So far I have worked out how to put markets into my 'Quick List', which is similar to Betfair's 'My Markets'. That is easy to do, and accessing markets is quicker than on Betfair. However, I've not yet ascertained whether it's possible to order my Quick List in any other order than chronologically.
That's it so far. Hopefully I'll be able to get going properly the next few days and post what I've learned and struggled with.
May I ask why you chose gruss over the others available out there ? What specific betting issue (s) are you looking for gruss to resolve as regards your particular betting strategy(s). eg are you basically just unable to bet satisfactorily in play, or is it more than that ?

Btw I'm a fellow technophobe, and so I will follow your thread with great interest. I hope it stays at a level comprehensible to all us technologically challenged bettors.

templeton peck , if you need any help with gruss , you will usually always get a response on the gruss forum within a few hours from other users . also if you put a message on the horse racing forum on here i am sure you will get a reply.

Fine as Frog Hair: Why did I choose Gruss? A brief trawl through this forum gave me the impression it was the best one, although I think it's probably down to personal preference.
All I want is a site to replace the old Betfair site. For now, the old Betfair site is perfect in terms of what it offers me (ignoring the page loading issue) but it's going to be switched off soon. The new site is too much of a mess (bets not matched in order, betslip keeping unmatched bets from other markets when moving to a new market, favourites being a jumble, etc).
Over time, I'll probably use an API to advance my betting, but for now I just want a replacement. I don't do much in-play trading, it's mainly manually placing quite a few bets before an event begins.
I can assure you there won't be any technobabble whatsoever in this thread. In my five minutes on there, I could even work out how to dutch a market at odds of my choice!
Howie: Gruss has a 30 day free trial.
harold_lloyd: thanks for the tips re the help on forums, I'm sure I'll be using them!

That's one of my concerns. I'd say it's the main reason I've never used one. I'm sure those involved with the site say not, but I'd rather have some independent source confirm it. I do get comfort that people more tech savvy, more advanced, and working with more funds use API.

I've used Gruss for approx 4 years, never had any problems of any kind. I'm involved in around 1000 markets every week.
I think it's far more likely (if at all) that strategies would be 'reverse engineered' by BF employees than by anyone else, especially the more successful you become. Gruss have no access to that information or bets that you place.

Gruss is also good fun for messing around with betting methods in running ... stakes can be as low as 1p.....however beware of refresh and transaction charges they can come as a shock.

Yes in addition to the above, do not run Gruss twice on your PC or from multiple PCs at the same time on the same account as you can quite easily be clobbered with transaction charges.

The thing I'd miss from Betfair (old platform) moving fulltime to Gruss is the lack of "My Markets". As bug-ridden as that feature has always been it saves me a lot of time navigating as I often bet on many different long term markets on different sports or need to move quickly between different markets on the same event (hence the irritation for the past few months).
I've used Gruss for a few years and think it's great for when I'm betting on in-play horse racing which is really what it is geared towards. Maybe there's a market for an API version and improved version of the old Betfair platform ?

Trevh: Thanks for your post. Like you say, there's always the risk BF are reverse engineering techniques. I do have a little more faith in them though.
Thing and Crispy/The Vis: Yes, I did notice something about transaction charges. It's something I'm going to have to look into.
GoBallistic: My Markets is key for me, it's one of the two main reasons I don't use the new site. Gruss's 'Quick List' does appear to more or less replicate 'My Markets', although I think it only sorts chronologically. Is this no good for you?
I've not had the chance to watch any demo videos, or read the user guide properly, but I am already wondering whether I can use Gruss for what I do. It does appear to be geared towards in-play trading and automation. I just want to manually place a large number of bets in quite a few markets quickly and efficiently.

The first thing I want to ascertain is how to, say, lay a number of horses race at odds and values of my choosing. The 'Dutch' option doesn't seem to give me the flexibility I require. I'll try and have a decent look in a while to try and work out what to do.

TP, I just tried out the Quick List and you're right it could to some extent replicate My Markets (and probably better it in time). I've used Gruss for years without realising it could get anything more than the day's racing markets

Didn't realise I'd be helping people out with Gruss before they were helping me!
It's much quicker than My Markets but you just can't decide the order. Not a huge problem as I tend to order markets chronologically but I do like to have long-term markets or upcoming major events at the top.

Templeton - Gruss is really designed for in-running betting but can replicate most of what traditional betfair does.
For example to set up a number of bets on a number of horses, when you are looking at a race - click on the "My Bets" bar you should see on the right hand side of your screen. If you click on Options here and tick "Display My Bets When Placing New Bets" - now each time you click on a horses price, you will get a BF type pop up box where you can change the odds and stake of each horse before submitting the bet. You can add as many horses to the list as you want or can do a back all or lay all here as well. This assumes you still have verify on and are not doing one click betting.
It is probably a good idea anyway to keep verify bets ticked anyway whilst you are learning the software and finding out what features you want to use. One click betting can quickly empty your bank if you aren't at ease with the software..........it can also empty your bank even if you think you know what you are doing

Another thing you may want to do as a new user is setup a maximum liability, either per market or per click so you don't have a disaster whilst getting used to the software.
As with many features in gruss go into Options/Preferences. The first tab is Staking. Here you can set a maximum liability e.g 100 would be the max you could then lose on any single market, or if the per click is ticked then it is the max liability per bet.
This can be a useful safety net if you carry a large float on BF at any one time, but of course remember to set this sensibly as there may be times you want to have a large liability in a particular market, but at least it can stop you laying something stupid like £10 @ 1000 if you did happen to click on the wrong part of the screen and have enough money in your account to service the bet.

Thanks, TheVis, that's exactly what I was looking for. The 'My Bets' is on the far right side of my second screen - which is slightly to my right - and so I didn't even see it! For anyone else reading this, you also need to select 'Display My Bets when placing new bets' from 'Option' which is just under 'My Bets'.
Yep, I'll be playing uber-safe to begin with. Using on a second Betfair account which has just £50 in it.

That's all I want, keep the classic interface, get rid of all the links to arcades, casino, slots etc and have a quick, straight-forward exchange. Perfect.
Thanks for the updates Templeton, I'm following with interest!

Sorry, I haven't used it. The old site's working so well that I haven't given it a go. I'll try and spend a few days on there between now and the end of the year.
