As many of you will know, Betfair's old site is on its last legs and it's only a matter of time before it ceases to be.  We have no choice but to either use the new site or venture into the world of application programming interfaces (API) such as Gruss and Geek's Toy.

Many will have tried the new site and encountered issues.  I thought I'd start this thread so we can share these problems and hopefully offer solutions.  I'd still recommend informing Betfair via the helpdesk and feedback option, but some of us on here may have work-arounds/solutions which Betfair haven't thought of.

Shirley Knot highlighted the first two issues on my other thread - Betfair markets taking an age (if at all) to load. Any advice please? - and I've added a third and fourth from my brief experience of the new site.  Please add your issues and any solutions:

1. No auto refresh.  (Yes I can get markets to auto refresh via a clever computer code but that's a pain)
2. Matched bets are not in market order,  that makes checking where I stand on markets with many selections a right pain.

3. 'Favourites' cannot be sorted or grouped and are added in a 'backwards' order.  When adding a favourite it automatically goes to the top of the list whether or not you already have other markets already added for the same event.  With the old site's 'My Markets', any new entry would sit below the market it is part of.  The order is also more sensible on 'My Markets' as the markets you add first will sit at the top of the list.  Chances are the first things you add will be for the event which will be starting first.  Then during the day you'll add more markets for events happening further into the future and so you want them further down the list.  In short, it's a bit of a mess and makes finding your bets very time consuming, with the likelihood you'll miss markets for an event that you've had bets on.

4. Unmatched bets are not grouped by market order.  This is the same problem as 2.  A new bet will just go to the bottom of the list, so when trying to find all your bets on a certain outcome, it's a right pain trawling through all of your bets to find them.

Just given the new site another 15 minutes of my time. I don't use bots and just place lots of bets manually.

I'm the opposite to a techno geek so there may be easy fixes to the issues I mention.

1- The size of the banner at the top is far too big and takes up unnecessary space.

2- How do you stop the fractional odds coming up every time you hover over a price?

3- Less options fit on the screen in multi-result markets eg - correct score / first goalscorer.

4- There is no % book at the bottom of the bets you input. (Essential to guard against mistakes when placing lots of bets.)

5- Unmatched bets aren't in order (eg - Different order from how they are listed in main market.)

6- Uncompleted selections are carried from one market to another. (eg if I select or part process a bet in one market. It will carry to the next one I select.)

7- When you click on a back/lay the odds box will not always be highlighted and ready to type in.(This means you have to manually select it with the cursor to highlight the odds box.)

8- I tried to place a bet at odds of 29. But it missed off the 2 and placed at 9. (Whether this was my error or I typed too fast i'm not sure.)

The biggest issue for me is the potential to make errors in bet placement. And all this was after only 15 minutes on football markets.
I'm sure if you only place a few bets the site is fine. But if you place lots of bets there are massive issues.

On a positive note I didn't get -

I backed 18 goals or more and it shows a green amount for 18 or more but is showing red for 20 goals or more, 22 goals or more and 24 goals or more when it should be green. The old site gave all the possible P&L scenarios if you placed bets on different lines this one doesn't. Also if you click on keep in play it doesn't work and gives an error message.

One large problem is that when you place a bet on any market and it is only partially matched it only shows the green and red profit and loss figures when you click cancel all unmatched or click continue rather than immediately like on the old site. This means it is not suitable for in play trading where markets are moving quickly.

In addition to issues mentioned above,
Navigation around the markets takes time for people placing lots of bets.
Event that have lots of markets like NFL take up more than a full screen on a standard laptop, but there is no scrolling menu on the left hand side which results in time consuming movement of the cursor all the way over to the  right side of the screen on all the markets that do not fit on the screen.

This is huge problem for me.

Also as I have mentioned on Site feedback, why 3 positions when you use the Tab key to move through the Betslip?
Again time consuming if you are placing lots of bets.

Rather depressing to see there are more issues than I'd realised from having a fairly brief look around.  Most seem fairly easy to fix and see no reason why they wouldn't be.

sweetchildofmine, I don't see any ads but I've clicked on 'Hide the Instant Games Module' so maybe that's why?  It's in the Options icon which looks like a cog.

The_E_Dead_Group, that was a reason I wouldn't use it but it's a lot better now.  Correct Score in football was one where it wouldn't fit on a page.  It does now.

Super Hans, you say Correct Score doesn't show all the outcomes but it does for me.  Some really good points there though that I hadn't picked up on.

acc, I agree with pressing Tab three times to get to the next line.  Thought I might be the only one to have an issue with that!

I've only just seen this thread. I started (yet another) moan on the site feedback forum.

Does anyone know how to hide matched bets? I often have many thousands of matched bets by the time
a race is run and I know from experience that they slow the page down enormously if visible. I use
the old site where I can tick to hide them, but I can't see that option on the new site. All I get
is a useless scrollbar that shrinks and grows with a mind of its own, and doesn't let me move it!

I shall return to it when you guys say it's fit for purpose. After 10 years I now have quite an apathy to giving BF feedback they don't act upon.

I've tried using the new site a few times but it rapidly gets too annoying. It isn't just a 'fear of the new', the site really is broken. I've tried filling in their feedback form for all the issues, but as far as I can tell, my messages just vanish into a black hole. Key problems (like getting profit & loss figures wrong) just aren't being fixed.

Plus the site wants me to buy a new extra large monitor before it deigns to show me all the odds, or even all the runners, on one screen! Terrible, terrible design.
Report Fangsy October 27, 2012 7:50 AM BST
You're all lucky to be able to use the new site at all!  Whenever I try it - even with nothing else running - it uses up all my laptop's RAM and I have to crash out.  With the old site freezing all the time and due to close anyway, my days on Betfair seem numbered.
Report acc October 28, 2012 11:11 AM GMT
I got his reply from Betfair about the Tab key. So they have no intention of doing anything about this, doesn't give much hope for them improving anything else.

Thank you for your query.

On the new version of the website, we have made the option to cancel unplaced bet an actual link. Using the tab key will then cause this link to be selected in between switching through the odds/stake boxes.

This was done when remodeling the site, so during the scripting being completely rewritten we have made the bet slip static when switching pages and the markets in the middle of the screen are now dynamic.

In the bet slip being static, when you use the tab key it must switch to the next link in the bet slip... which is unfortunately the 'cancel bet' button (x).
Report Templeton Peck October 28, 2012 11:26 AM GMT
Thanks, acc.  I must admit the tab thing is something I can get used to, but as you say, their answer does indicate certain other issues won't be fixed.

I know nothing about programming, but if the bet slip is static and many of the issues are to do with the bet slip then we could have a major problem.

It's been mentioned somewhere on here, but keeping the bet slip static when switching pages is crazy. I expect there will be plenty of bets misplaced because of it.

The 3 tab issue is annoying

Not listing unmatched bets in market order is ridiculously bad.

Really does need a stripped down option for people who just want to use the exchange.(the original betfair product remember)

I will never use betfair SP and i'll never use Fixed odds. -nobody in their right mind will!!!

Betfair have lost the plot.

Instead of having an exchange (with a virtual monopoly) - a great product.

The focus should be to get more exchange users. BUT they have diluted the product and are gradually sliding towards being a 'normal' bookmaker.

Its no wonder the share price continues to slide

and

on one of these you cant see your bet history or the result of any matched bets. Or the amount of money available at given odds.

and on the other one you cant see the book percentage or the price graphs.

If they put em both together they'd have a great mobile product.

dan33 - any news on whether your problem has been fixed or not?

from a little play i've just had i suspect it has.

having a little look at the HTTP, it's not just the front end that's changed, it appears that they've made some changes to the architecture trying to do some (unnecessarily?) clever things with HTTP PUTs, DELETEs and POSTs on the bet slip, which could well have caused your problem.

if they have fixed it it would mean that their attempt at being smart failed.
Report dan33 October 31, 2012 4:24 PM GMT
DStyle - I've just tried it again, and I'm still getting the same problem.

I think it will take a lot to get them to abandon their attempt at being smart (if that is indeed what it is), especially as it seems my fingers are the problem, being just too fast for the new system.

I've come to the conclusion that traders are not welcome on the new interface - whether or not that makes good business sense will become apparent in time.

Personally, when the switchover takes place I'll start using Gruss or somesuch through the API; something that I probably should have done ages ago.

The thing that gets me with Betfair and its future as a company is that it's no longer a pioneer in the industry. They revolutionised online betting, but instead of continuing to be a leader, they are being led - down the path of the traditional bookmaker where winners aren't welcome and other customers are simply a means of generating income. Betfair isn't Ladcrokes or Bet £3.65 and it shouldn't aspire to be them either.
Report DStyle October 31, 2012 7:18 PM GMT
you may well go to gruss, but given that they're going to be changing the entire API architecture in the near future don't hold your breathe.

everyone is always going to complain about changes to the layout, but the underlying architectural changes baffle me. i just don't seem to think it justifies the risk and stability of the site particularly when the line for the last 8 years has been about constantly changing the site to become futureproof to anticipated volume. did they never achieve that goal?

someone is obviously very keen on updating the site to a RESTful implementation but i honestly struggle to believe that that someone has really done the numbers. it's no doubt cleaner and a bit of an architectural IT gold standard, but what about the cost of getting it as robust as the old site.

hey-ho.

Had a position I wanted to change quickly in the Chelsea/Man Utd match last night but couldn't get the market to load in classic (loading, please wait while the market loads) so decided the only option was to switch to beta. Not wanting to linger any longer than necessary I decided to use the much heralded 'cash out' option for the first (and last) time. The first time I clicked 'cash out' after a 10 second wait got a message saying the market had changed so my cash out could not be matched. After clicking again and another wait got a message saying the cash out had been accepted, BUT the red/green profit and loss figures in the market itself remained the same......so had the cash out worked or not?
A good 30 seconds later after frantic 'refreshing' and searching through 'my bets' {nothing appeared to be showing) the red/green figures corrected themselves to show my true position.
Conclusion? Beta is still not fit for purpose and I will not be visiting again in the near future.

I hope layer1982 doesn't mind, but here's some of his issues which he's posted in the Site Feedback forum:

Just tried trading the tennis on Murray match.... So much more difficult.

Various things need to be changed:

1) Refresh button needs to be bigger, as does whole odds area. Needs to be similar to size it was before, no need for it to be smaller, just makes it more difficult to bet.

2) No need for score above odds, or Live video feed window to right of odds, provide option to remove please.

3) Placing bets takes longer, simply unacceptable to someone who use site to trade in and out of positions. when you click to lay or back something, you now need to click on amount in order to change whereas before you could instantly alter amount, by entering the amount.

4) Open bets position takes too long too load on numerous occasions leaving you unable to cancel a position, again unacceptable for a trader.

5) basically site needs to be as much as old site as possible, whilst keeping all your new features for those who desire to use them. But do not force them on people who don't want to use them as they will refuse to trade under those circumstances I am sure.

Thanks.

Yomomma, is the problem you find on cricket lines as follows? This is what has happened with mine.  Normally it should say: If less than xx runs (so much profit/loss), If xx runs or more (so much profit/loss).

But the new site seems to be thinking it's a normal odds market and is showing red on the selection I laid, and green on all the other ones both below AND above it!

Would like to hear from betfair if they are aware of this and intend to correct it. Thank you

Don't think this one has been posted:

With an open bet, highlight the odds that you wish to change and 'accidentally' let go of the left mouse button when the cursor is hovering over the amount box.  Hey presto, the number in your odds box is now added to the number in the amount box. Once this has happened, you can't change the odds or amount.  You have to click on the x and it reverts to its original state.

e.g. you have a £2 back at odds of 2.0, try and change the odds of 2.0 to, say, 1.5 then if you're not careful the amount will become £22.  Thankfully the odds box then becomes unresponsive and so I can't see of any way the bet would be placed.

My biggest problem is that if I place bets on via the API they don't show on the site (either in the grid or in the Betting Slip section).  I have to wait for the race to finish and then look into the statement to see if they were actually put on.

The new site, if it can't show bets placed, even after countless refreshes, is dangerous to use.   How can one know whether to trade out in running, and for how much, if one doesn't even know what's been backed at all.

This has been going on for weeks now and still it's not been addressed.

Report john92 November 20, 2012 6:36 PM GMT
I am trying to work it now.

It looks awful. The size of the actual market is too small.

The gruss auto refresh app doesn't seem to work.

The whole point seems to be to sell more products. Instead of 'Place Bets' 'My Bets' 'Rules' 'Help' we now have 'Singles' 'Mulitples' 'Open Bets'.

The list of 'open bets' is around 25% longer in beta which is a pain.

Why replace 'submit' with 'update'?

The 'X' to cancel a bet is alot smaller.

Clicking on 'horse racing' through the left hand menu takes you to the horse racing tab. If I wanted the horse racing tab I would have clicked on that.

Using the left hand tab is now slower.

Live Video on the taskbar has gone. To get it open in another window, with a bigger screen, you now have to right click on 'full live video schedule'. What a joke. Maybe it appears nearer the race? Who knows? There is nowhere on the taskbar for it to go though. Someone has made the choice that one thing won't fit and kept links to 'multiples' 'offers' 'McCain' and 'Nicholls' while making sure there is no room for live video.

This is all before I have tried to place a bet other than a lay of 2 on a 1000 shot to get a general idea how it works.

Just had another venture over to new site.

Main issues for me:

1. How do you get rid of jockey names, silks and numbers?
2. Refresh button too small.
3. Space allocated for horses names too big, meaning area for amounts available to back or lay too small.
4. Not tried placing a bet yet, so no view on betslip (guess it will be less user friendly though...).

All in all a negative development. Sad

I have had a few answers to some of the issues raised on here:

Order of matched/unmatched bets:  We will be able to sort in market order.  Taking longer than anticipated to fix as the bet slip persists between markets so not straightforward to resolve.

Favourites/My Markets: this may be improved but not a quick fix.

Bets remaining in betslip when moving to a new market: This is by design.  Can click on "this market only" at the top to display only selections from the mkt being viewed.

Amending open bets requires you click on 'Update' rather than pressing Enter on keyboard:  should be fixed within fortnight.

Refresh screen automatically option: the mkt does refresh every 15 seconds.  No option to turn off.

% Book functionality in betslip: this has now been added

Fractional odds showing when hovering over price: In list of things to do.

The list of things to do mentioned in the last point is over 200 long, based on customer feedback.  There will be more communication with us all at month end.  In Sept, 50% of users used the new site and it's now up to 80%.

I know you all have various issues not mentioned here but hopefully this update is still useful.

I'm still using the old site.  Unfortunately, I'm a procrastinator and so I haven't got any further with my plan on trying out Gruss.  Maybe tomorrow...

I'm STILL having problems with incorrect bet stakes being placed on the new system - Betfair Community Manager 2 is there any chance you could inquire as what is being done to sort this issue out?

Betfair contacted me about six weeks ago to discuss the matter, but nothing has changed.

For anyone who doesn't know what I'm on about or who would like to have a laugh at how terrible the new system is, watch the video linked to below. It's a joke.

(In the video 2 bets are placed incorrectly by the system, one correctly. The final bet is the most worrying - it supposedly allows me to exceed my account balance in exposure)

Yes on the new site and it wasn't just a one off, it happened twice more at the weekend. I had to log out and then log back in, in order to cancel them. Some people are in for a nasty shock if it happens in play. I won't be touching in play.
Report Templeton Peck November 22, 2012 7:25 PM GMT
Yep, YOMOMMA mentioned it on this thread on the 14th. I'm not sure what would be worse for Betfair: mothballing the new site until it works or having customers lose money as a result of this (or any other) glitch and going to the press.

One more (and last for a while) update.

As has been mentioned on here, the old site will be switched off at some point. I've had it conformed that will be whenever Betfair are "satisfied that the new site is performing at a level the majority of our existing customers will see as a positive experience."  There is no date at present.

They will be giving us four weeks notice before closing the old site.

Of course, not all of us will ever see the new site as positive but we'll just have to adapt to begin with whilst continuing to give our feedback to Betfair.

No problem.

The 80% figure doesn't surprise me as many issues only affect those of us who place lots of bets.

In an ideal world, Betfair will release a 'Betfair lite' version for those of us who don't want the bells and whistles but also aren't too keen on using a third-party API.

As for the 80% figure....

During some premium charge discussions betfair defined an "active user" as someone who had placed at least one bet during the specified period.

You would need to know how betfair defined "used" before any % would have any meaning.

Keeping anything running whether car of software realistically needs a bit of work but given new site is apparently a bugfest and the old one is relatively bug free it's hardly a great excuse to ditch the old one from the user point of view. The problem I'm sure will occur when some marketing/management guy is pushing the next arcade flashing cr*p (or whatever) nobody wants to be added and they either justify doing some of the work twice to add to two sites or do it once and he questions why people won't see the new shiny thing on the old site. Or if they change some of the way the stuff works and again have to change the sites twice. Management won't like keeping duplicate products running forever, even if for us the user it's the best thing.

Then again they can't go willy nilly changing the way stuff works too much otherwise all the API apps would stop working so I'm guessing that's not going to happen in a hurry, so the users could valildly ask why they don't keep the old one up and do the odd essential fix if required.

Given the love of the old site and the hate of the new one you have to hope they use common sense!

As far as I'm concerned, fix the page loading issue (which wasn't an issue at all today, which makes me wonder what on earth is causing it) and sort out 'My Markets' (customise markets never worked and you can't add Aussie mkts by clikcingon the +) and the old site would be basically perfect.

All I want is a simple site that is easy and quick to use.

I guess there's an outside chance that at some point there will be a 'Betfair Lite' in addition to the new site, but even that would be some way off.

Whilst they acknowledge there are issues with the new site, they believe that for many of us it's an aversion to change that's the problem, and this is something they can't fix.

All - here's an update I've received today on some of the common problems that we have been working on. As ever, please let us know if we what say here is not proving the case, and I'll take that feedback to the relevant people. Thanks all:

We have now fixed the issue on handicap markets where we were not showing P&L on the market correctly. P&L will now show the position against each runner on handicap markets as they are all independent positions.

Here a list of the significant betslip fixes that have been deployed:

1.    The duplicate bets issue where customer marks a bet for deletion on Open Bets, clicks update, gets an empty receipt, and then every time they click continue they get a duplicate bet.
2.    Incorrect stakes being entered, i.e. customer types ‘100’ very quickly and only ‘10’ appears in the stake box. (An issue for customers using keyboard quickly to submit bets.)
3.    Bets not being submitted if ‘Place Bets’ button is clicked before the betslip has finished calculating the profit value for the stake entered. (An issue for customers using keyboard quickly to submit bets.)
4.    Unable to modify the odds for a BSP odds limit bet in Open Bets.
5.    Betslip gets stuck in a loop after customer attempts to modify/cancel a  bet that has lapsed or matched in the background. The error message below is displayed. When you click continue you get the same message.

An issue I had recently involved a 'ghost' selection on my betting slip.

I was placing a series of bets on football matches. I placed a bet and moved on to the next one, and so on, seven times.

Without my noticing, the first selection was being repeated along with each subsequent bet *without appearing on the betting slip*. So when I clicked to place the one bet on the slip it was placing two bets each time, a bug that cost me £28.

I contacted support about this and got a reply (from someone who called me Iva, even though my name is Dan) saying that there was no error and that I fully intended to place the same bet seven times, so tough luck to me. I challenged this but all of my subsequent emails have been ignored.

I've posted this on the thread covering the switch-off of the old site but thought it worth posting here:

I've had a chat with Betfair and they say there are no plans to turn the site off on 31st January.

I've also had it confirmed that we will be given plenty of notice.  I was also told for the first time that it won't be a dramatic switch off but a gradual closing down of the site.

Thanks to our feedback, the ordering of bets on the new site is being looked into, but - and I know many of you will not be happy with this - they're about to switch on another new big product and so their developers are pushed for time at the moment.

I don't know if I've mentioned it on this thread, but if you don't want to see bets from other markets when switching to another market, click on "This market only" at the top of the bet slip.  The bet slip will then only show bets from the market you're looking at.

And just to confirm, no date has been set for the shut-down.  They're not going to close the old site until they're happy the new site works as customers need it to.  No date has been set.  So don't stop with the feedback through the suitable channels (i.e. don't just whinge on here).  Just because you're not seeing an instantaneous response/fix doesn't mean you're being ignored.
