As a punter for a long long time I have been thinking, what advice would one offer to a novice punter, would one advise them to stay away from betting or not.

My advice for what its worth would be to always always evaluate the odds.

my first advice would be to stay away unless you have lots of time at your hands.. betting takes lots of time in front of computer and telly..

Open up accounts with all the major bookies.  There are hundreds of pounds lying around in free bets.  Use this to fund your learning period.

funny cos i've been betting profitably for nearly 30 yrs now and have always enjoyed the studying part but i would say dont do it....have to put a lot of work in to have an edge these days and i'm far from sure it's worth the investment of time required

In my experience of punters, they don't get any better at finding winners no matter how long they've been at it.
So unless you've cracked it, any advice to a novice would be worthless.
