weird, that post hans't displayed correctly, i'll try again

Thank You
How can I use values in Column A and Row 1 instead of AA and 222? |
By:
You can use the ADDRESS function to create a cell reference from the values in other cells. INDIRECT then gives the value for this reference
e.g =INDIRECT(ADDRESS(a1,b1,,,"Sheet1")) |

Thanks for your help. But I think it still uses AA and 222.
If I had a list of town names in row 1 and street names in column A. How can I place Salford in one cell and Coronation in another to get an answer in a third cell? |

You've lost me:
You said: Is it possible to get the value of AA222 in a 3rd cell by placing AA and 222 in 2 different cells. Did you mean get the value of what is in the CELL AA222? That is what we answered. IF you want to place Salford and Coronation in two cells and get "SalfordCoronantion" use something like = a1 & b1 IF you want find some value which corresponds elsewhere to Salford and Coronation you'll need to use a lookup table (see the wizard - perhaps depending on your version of excel) |

Jlivermore--your first reply was correct and most helpful.
I wasn't sure if it was possible before you replied. But I would like now to use values in column A instead of 1,2,3 etc and values in row 1 instead of A,B,C. |
By:
ok, we're getting there. so if we have your Salford and coronation in 2 different cells, exactly what answer do you want our third cell to show?
By:
Salford is in AA1 and Coronation is in A222.
I'd like the cell value of AA222 by using Salford and Coronation in a similar way as you showed with AA and 222,and without using "Define Name" if posssible. |
By:
can we take a step back a second, so I actually give you a useful answer.
I'm having a guess here: Do you have a list of places in the top row (row 1) ? And a list of streets (? or whatever coronation is) in the first column (column A)? And we need to look for Salford and Coronation and then return the address of the corresponding cell (AA222)? |
By:
I think he wants whatever the value is in AA222 ie. a tw-way table lookup.
By:
two-way
By:
yeah thats what i suspect
By:
I checked out "two-way table lookup" and found the solution.
Thank you for your help. |
