Can any tech experts on here help please ?

Downloaded some software today to save a you tube video to my desktop and it seems to have knocked out windows explorer

I cannot access my programmes list to delete the software and cannot click on anything

There is a big box in the middle of the screen saying windows explorer has stopped working

check online for a solution
restart the programme

When clicking on those options it goes off briefly than comes back

I think one of my downloads has taken over windows explorer

Any help gratefully received

you will have to start the computer in "safe mode" to do a system restore.
( hit F8 (or is it F5?) repeatedly as the PC Boots up )

Safe mode only loads a minimal set of dll's and drivers and is specifically designed to enable rescue from situations such as you describe.

once in safe mode, do a system restore to a date point before corruption.

p.s.
'restore' can take a couple of minutes to appear on screen after being started because of microsoft's rubbish coding, so make sure you give it time to cook before giving up because you think restore won't 'start'

Is it locked up in safe mode?

Can you ctrl-alt-del and get task manager? If you can get that, it's got a run menu, and if you can get that you get try msconfig (disable new looking crap on startup tab) or regedit (much more complicated, but google somehthing like explorer extensions to hopefully sort it.

msconfig is a quick tool to allow you to quickly do some administrative stuff like set what is to start up etc.
You don't say what version of windows you have (which would help!). On windows 7 that you mention system restore is also in tools in msconfig but system restore is also available from safe mode in XP/7. For 7 see
http://windows.microsoft.com/vi-VN/windows-vista/Start-System-Restore-from-a-command-prompt
if that doesn't help have a look around google for system restore command prompt or system restore safe mode XP if it's XP etc.

If you can go back to a recent enough restore point that's probably quickest way to solve it, and you can do that entirely from safe mode and just with a keyboard. Safe mode command prompt is there to help fix just this sort of situation where a full boot is screwed, but even with a full boot if you can get a task manager you can get the "run" command, type "cmd" in it, and get a command prompt.

Good luck!

sorted it last night after reading your post and typing in msfig
afre a bit I found the system restore option in TM as you outline above and when I logged back on problem was sorted
ran malware full scan this morning to make sure everything was OK
I reckon this happened when I downloaded software to capture you tube videos
must of contained a malicious virus that hijacked windows explorer
it was a massive relief to have my laptop back to normal and it probably saved me a sizeable bill too
so very many thx for your help
