Obviously most of the football bets waged on Betfair (and elsewhere) will be largely centred around the English Premier League, Champions League and international matches. It's where most liquidity exists . . . but I wonder how many of us bet on games outside those upper echelons?
Does anyone bet regularly, or even specialise in, the Championship, Leagues One and Two, the Conference or the lower Scottish divisions below the SPL?
And what about La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, etc?
Reason I ask is I am considering setting up a website providing information/previews on upcoming games involving these leagues. Not a tipping service, but purely collated, reliable info on things like likely teams line-ups, suspensions, injuries . . the kind of thing that might affect your placement of bets on any given weekend.
I very rarely bet outside of league 2 and the conference, I just like betting on football I have seen on a regular basis. With my team playing in the lower leagues that is where my interest and knowledge lies.

seriously ,outside of the EPL (and the lower half of the EPL included) it's DEAD , some would say surprising considering the attendances aren't too bad.
as a general rule it depends on how many games are played at any one time - a conference stand alone will always attract more interest than one EPL match played on a Saturday 3.00 KO

I'd be surprised if fans of lower division clubs didn't exploit their specific knowledge of their club and the rest of the league their team plays in to consistently make a few bob along the way.
The loss of a top striker, keeper, centre-half, midfielder, etc, would probably generally impact much greater on a team outside the top flight (and Championship), where the cover for each position is of a far lesser quality. In some cases, League One & Two teams have to draft in youth teamers to plug gaps, so you'd expect there to be value if you can spot it.

And if your betting strategy does not differentiate between the divisions, or countries or whatever other ways in which teams are categorized, then yesI would say there is a huge amount of interest.

there used to be a guy who made an absolute mint betting exclusively on second scottish 'jumpers for goalposts' division , pre betfair too !

I take a great interest in Div1 for the reason that my team plays in that league, and travel to many 'away games'. Give me a competitive Div1 any day of the week, as opposed to, say EPL matches which, for me, tv only. It's seriously different class.

Ken, has your specific knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of your own team and the opposition enabled you to win value bets that might have escaped the attention of punters who tend to confine their betting activity to the EPL?

I suspect people that bet on these leagues to a serious degree will already have sources that will provide as much info as any site you may want to set up, any club even in the minor foreign leagues now has their own website that gives the basic info regarding team probables and injuries.

Plechy I am sure ken would say yes to your question. I very rarely lose a bet which involves my team, you have to be realistic though and leave the rose tinted specs behind.

plechy, re your post to me. I very seldom bet on a Bournemouth, and when I do, it is usually a lay of my own team, when key players could be missing, knowledge only available to the keenest fans. Unfortunately I don't live near Bournemouth any more, in fact from where I live in Herts, it's easier to get to an away match at,say Sheffield, than it is getting to Dean Court. On top of that, there are 7 new sides to to Div1 this coming season, so seven away grounds to visit, some I've never been to before. Matches at Coventry, Crawley, Portsmouth, etc are to be savoured.

Ken, you can find specific examples on the fan threads on the football forum - subjective views of players, managers, games, tactics etc. On a continuum you have two extremes - the overly optimistic and the extremely pessimistic. Would they beat a non-fan betting on their games over a season? As you move towards the centre of the scale are they more likely to do better? Is anyone likely to very rarely lose a bet just because they are a fan of the team they are betting on?

You're right, most of that valuable info is already out there . . . but to find it would require hours of painstaking work scouring multiple websites and then processing that info before placing your bets. I will save others the time and trouble. What I intend to do is do all that work for punters who dabble in the lower divisions, collate it all together and present it in one concise email that will be mailed to our subscribers on matchday.

You can't let your heart rule your head when betting, so it makes good sense to exploit knowledge of your own team's situation to your financial benefit wherever poss. I take Die's point that some fans are blind to their own team's capabilities but, in most cases, they SHOULD be better placed to pass judgement and gain profit from it in a betting sense.
For those who tend to lay their team, it makes even more sense . . . if they win, your're happy anyway and, if they lose, you win money. For many cynics, laying their own team is the only way to guarantee three points!
It is a general rule that lower divisions teams are much more greatly affected by the loss of one or two key players than those in the PL and Championship, where there are invariably similar quality squad players capable of providing adequate cover.
To possess the knowledge of knowing that so and so's star striker, with 20 goals to his name, is not playing on any given day would certainly be more power to your elbow.

Die Linke, you mention two extreme groups, the optimistic and the pessimistic. I would say the optimistic would be the larger, also you ignore the realistic, a group that I modestly include myself among, and I believe that group to be the most likely to make their betting pay, especially in matches involving there own side. I have no qualms about betting against my side although when I do, I keep it at a modest level, that may be seen as a weekness.

..re Burton's post where he says 'he very rarely loses' when betting in matches involving his own side. With respect, I would take that with a pinch of salt unless he is a ManC fan and backs them when at home. ''Very rarely''? Are you sure ? Tell me you make it pay but ''Very rarely lose''?

I have found it more difficult since we left the conference I must admit. I think some of you are assuming I bet on 46 league matches a year, I don't. Last season I backed and layed my team in 27 matches of which 24 I got correct. In season 2010-11 I covered 35 matches of which I got 30 correct. I always bet level stakes so I know I am in profit. As I said earlier I am realistic about my teams chances and I leave the rose tinted specs behind. To be honest I am not bothered whether you believe my results or not.

That's an excellent and sustained performance, Burton.
You prove my point that knowledge, allied to your personal judgement, can reap good rewards.
Fancy becoming our Burton Albion 'spy'?!
