occasion to read the following very nasty, spiteful phrase. " Are you stupid because you are a loser, or are you a loser because you are stupid ?" Now whilst I think this phrase is totally wrong in a general context, it does make me wonder if it is perhaps very correct when applied to the gambling endeavours of the majority. Or is it just a case, as implied to me on another thread here, that losing gamblers are not mostly dumb, but are just having a bit of fun, and know exactly what they're doing. I favour the "dumb" interpretation/ I'm open to be convinced I'm wrong, so go ahead if you wish.
Nobody gambles for the fun of losing, they all hope to win even if that hope is very small. 'Recreational gambler' seems to be the accepted pc term for mug gambler, but having said that I don't think anyone is stupid because they're a loser, but there has to be a good chance that if someone is stupid they will be a loser.

I suppose if someone gambles in a manner that they cannot possibly ever win long term, then they could be called stupid if they do it hoping to win long term. Whatever. Long live stupid gamblers I suppose some would say. After all it is a zero sum game.

What about the "aspirational" punter. The one who works very hard at becoming a professional but hasn't got there yet.
The quest to become a successful punter has a very steep learning curve and not everyone is going to make the grade. And even those who do succeed are likely to spend a number of years learning from their mistakes. Their bottom line might show them to be a loser, but they are neither "recreational" nor "stupid".
"Recreational" is a good term for a losing punter who enjoys a bet but always bets within their means. Some of these people may indeed be "stupid" but I would venture to say that the majority of them are people who are very good at some of the things that they do in life, but punting just isn't one of them.
"Stupid" is probably too cruel a word for those unfortunates who are in the grip of the disease of compulsive gambling. "Tragic" is probably a better word. These people are almost entirely losers and provide most of the money that professionals live on. Much of the rest comes from the "recreationals" and a smaller amount from the "aspirationals".
Can a compulsive gambler be a winner? Maybe. But it's very rare. Perhaps they might get lucky one day and win a lottery. But even then they're just as likely to gamble the winnings away with interest.
The rarest class of gambler would be the compulsive professional punter. The "hen's teeth" of the gambling fraternity. The best word for these would be "workaholic".

sometimes it can be the 'stupid' that get paid out and win big.
i was in the bookies not so long ago and 2 races were due to go off 5 minutes apart. a guy wrote down the time of the race and then as he was writing it down the screen changed to the next race. he then proceeded to pick 3 numbers of horses and put them in a combination tricast.
needless to say he realised his mistake just after the off and wasnt happy about having his money on 2 x 20/1s and a 14/1 but come the end of the race he was ecstatic when they came in 1 2 3!!!

I think the whole gambling concept relies on "the stupid getting paid out", there's a fine line between correct odds, poor odds, and value odds, and those that consistently take poor odds need to get paid out regularly or they would give up and that would be a disaster!
For example, a mug will happily lay a true 10.0 shot at odds of 12.0 resulting in the mug winning 90% of the time, that's what keeps him coming back for more.

When I was about 10 a drunk (whom I was riding my Striker past) asked me "were you born with no brains or did you develop them?"
I almost fell off my bike laughing and have never got over it.
