The 2 day conference held on the 19th and 20th May was a huge success with attendees and sold out quickly. We will be repeating the conference on September 8th and 9th, details at www.smartersig.com/Conference2012.html

I took the plunge and atteded the conference. It was an enjoyable weekend and very interesting, especially for those who take their betting seriously, or like me are wanting to take their betting seriously.

I think where this conference differed from other such events, is that it was not organised to sell you a product/software etc like others seem to be.
The introduction to data modelling with R by Dr Alun Owen was excellent and R is a free product! This guy really knows his stuff.

Other topics complemented the modelling and data analysis well, such as problems with data analysis and possible solutions, validation etc. All the presenters seemed very knowledgeable.

There were a few little niggles with timing etc, but this was their first conference to be fair, and the presenters were approachable during the lunch break and on the saturday night social get together. They even welcomed continued contact via email as well.

I'd say it was a success and will be at least an annual event. I'm hoping so.

If anyone has any questions then feel free, don't forget one of the speakers was Simon Rowlands head of R&D at Timeform and Betfair blogger and one would assume he is unlikely to get involved unless the organisers are serious about their stated intent, which is quite simply to improve peoples betting strategies and thinking.

What's with the 'we' Olias?

On the 5th of April when you joined you were pretending to just be a punter exited that someone was putting on a betting conference

It was a great success.  Before I went to the conference I was just a humble punter, doing my best against the sharks.  The systems they showed me have now turned me into Jaws.  Whilst this has improved my punting no end to be a big shark, I am worried why I now seem to have all metal teeth.

>"We will be repeating the conference on September 8th and 9th"

Olias, I am interested in attending but please can you explain what has changed (improved?) to justify the doubling of price from £99 to £199?
Report OliasOfSunhillow May 25, 2012 9:07 AM BST
The first run was really a pilot hence the ridiculous price of £99. Essentially we wanted it to be a bargain in case we had any unforseen teething problems. As it happened things went smoothly. The current price is more realistic for a two day conference. If you check out conference prices you will see that £199 is still ridiculous for two days. I went on a trading seminar the other day and for one day it was £150 and I have to say the calibre of presenters were not as high as this conference. Dr Alun Owen for example has just finished his PHd in football data modelling from a betting perspective and is member of the sports data modelling group within the Royal Statistical Society.
Report Getafix May 25, 2012 9:18 AM BST
Thanks Olias, that sounds fair enough.  I am only interested in the "Money Management" section and was just trying to decide whether still worth it for just that one topic (would be good to meet some of the competition too ;) ).
Report OliasOfSunhillow May 25, 2012 9:38 AM BST
There may be slight changes but nothing major. For example Simon is considering covering pace analysis which would be timely with the possible introduction of sectionals at AW tracks and the fact that he is an advisor on this venture and very knowledgable on American style pace analysis. There is also chat about switching the automatic bet placement section from a visual basic express platform to R so that we are discussing an all in one bet analysis and bet placement platform. But dont get the impression that you have to be a techno wizard to attend, you dont. There is plenty for those that are and for those that are not.

Lol, tbf you didn't really help yourself with the previous thread you created with the dodgy marketing.  I am sure it would have sold itself without the need for that... the content for the conference looks pretty good.  Pushing that aside...

Pace analysis would certainly be of interest to me.  I started downloading the data from Turftrax a long time ago wrt sectionals etc shame there wasn't enough interest as it was eventually abandoned (before I had time to amass enough decent sectional data to safely start analysing) - assume they couldn't afford/pass on the costs?  Out of interest do you have any links/additional info with regards to this AW sectional timings proposal e.g what technology being used, who is taking on this venture etc?
Report JLivermore May 25, 2012 10:50 AM BST

Give 'em a break DStyle.
Apart from the unfortunate spamminess of the few opening posts, it doesn't seem to be all that bad.
Let's face it, it's not a conference claiming to show you how to win, but only how to improve your data analysis techniques, money mgt skills , and other general betting matters.
In that sense, you could argue that the more the general punting public becomes aware and skillful in these areas, the more in fact general liquidity might potentially increase across all available markets.
After all, even if we all become skilled in these areas, we're not all then going to be betting in the same direction at the same time.
It will still boil down to personal preferences and perceptions.
And to pre-empt, I don't know these people from Adam, nor do I intend to attend any of their conferences.
But I don't see the reason to kneecap them, if they are in fact providing some sort of reasonably goo, ethical product. And I certainly see no problems in their charging ( and making a profit) to cover the costs of recruiting outside experts, as they would seem to be doing. That just good old plain sense and good old capitalism. Or is that out of style in the modern UK ?

i have a problem with the methods being used to drum up interest and that the pricing in nowhere to be seen on the website. there's a whiff of spiced ham about them which doesn't fit with a reputable outfit which apparently sold out very quickly

Yes Lex great album, getting back to the conference and the points made that no one would give anything away. Frog hair is correct in that in a changing betting world we all need core analytical skills if we are to evolve. Most punters have no idea how to analyse bet data nor the foggiest idea about money management. These skills are needed to get ahead and stay ahead and are very much a part of the conference. The price is ridiculously cheap, now you might say that I am bound to say that but if any of you know anything about professional conference circuits you will no what I mean

Oh and save yer selves a bit of money.

For every bet write down the stake and your return.
from this you can derive your average odds.
Write down for every bet the odds that you got for that bet.
In less than 100 bets you will know if youre making money or not and why.

Thats money management done in under 50 words. Its shocking that hardly anyone who loses money keeps accounts and yet most of those that are successful, do. Making money is a business and to run a business you need to sell at a higher price than you buy and in sufficient volume. You also need to keep accounts to see how youre doing.
it aint rocket surgery.

I really enjoyed the conference and found it very useful. Some of it was a bit unfocused and needs improving, but it was the pilot  after all which the price reflected. The "R" talks were excellent and the highlight. The meal out together was a lot of fun. A great bunch of people and a rare treat to be able to discuss gambling intelligently with a group of like minded people. Leicester its self is a bit skanky but we found an excellent Indian restaurant close to the hotel and a quiet pub with a pool table you could get to play on on a friday night. Could those who (genuinely) attended please provide a review of the conference.

I would also be interested in questions such as:
- How much was this aimed specifically at traders?
- How much was specific to horse racing and not other sports?

As a recreational punter (not a trader) who has no interest in horses, but who is interested in the sections on R, data analysis and programming, I am split on whether this would be worthwhile for me.

Thanks
Report pumpkinslayerII May 29, 2012 11:17 AM BST
There was nothing that was aimed at traders and the only talk that was specific to horse racing was the talk on ratings. The most useful part by far were the "R" talks. Although horse racing was used as an example to teach the software you could use it for any sport. It is worth going just for those talks.

The programming section didn't really have enough time to go into all that is needed for full automation. You will learn how login automatically through the API, place a bet and cancel. Things like getting market information were not included. It was interesting, but I'm not in a position where I can run off and write a full blown bot for example. But that's fair enough I feel given the time restraints.

There rest of the talks were ok and interesting in part but could have been better.

But all in all, let's remember it was a pilot. It will improve. And I had a really enjoyable weekend away.

Couple with that you will be mixing with some experienced and successful players.
