I'm sure the treatment was featured in Stephen Hawking's brave new world programme and is no forlorn hope.

Happy to help Feck. The parents of this little girl deserve all our support for doing everything they can to give her a chance of beating her cancer. Sounds as if the large amount of money required needs to be raised quickly too so hope many more come forward and help.

A terrible thing for the child and parents to face. Glad to help.

Thanks gents and anyone else who contributed. Total isn't looking good at the moment given the story in yesterday's daily record. Hope it gets shown on the Scottish news and / or a Bill Gates type steps in. It is a mega sum but if it's the treatment I saw on BNW I think they identify the part of the DNA responsible and prescribe drugs that target it, the problem being those drugs have to be taken for life.

Glad to help also.

72k already? Pretty decent start imo.

There are many sad things in the world... makes me so intolerant of people that don’t rejoice their luck in life and what cards they have been dealt... or worse still squander their adult life.

And then an innocent girl – too young to have been good or bad as person yet, gets dealt this...

Only sadder things than child illness in first world are children born into countries and families of poverty and abuse... or ill in developing world without basic medical care

Every child should have unfettered opportunity in life – sadly the world will never offer that.

Yeah, wise words mag.  Unfortunately it's not an isolated case :(

Thanks for posting the link, Feck, I'm glad to have helped too.

Anyone know why the treatment has to be so expensive? £500,000 sounds an extortionate amount to have to pay in the circumstances.
Report TheMaskedAvenger January 16, 2012 12:02 AM GMT
Presumably because it has to continue for life.
Report GEORGE.B January 16, 2012 12:08 AM GMT
Oh, I see. So presumably even if £100,000 can be raised, that will pay for some initial treatments to be going on with?

Thanks again to everyone who contributed. There's a further story on it this morning

http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/2012/01/16/family-of-cancer-girl-vanessa-riddle-overwhelmed-as-fund-raises-80k-in-five-days-86908-23701345/

George, if the donations fall short I would hope it would be the case they'd be able to start the treatment and then appeal for further funds for the drugs later, but I don't know for sure. If it's the treatment I'm thinking of the drugs have to be tailor made for life.
