Yay or nay ?

I made that resolution this year - #epicfailure although I can't bet in-play anymore being where I am, I'm still logging on to betfair and still keeping afloat with my betsGrin

Are you planning on doing something different in January and if so what? traveling etc or a new job?

Time flies by when your on betfair which is not good for many reasons.

Anyone thinking of making a New Year's resolution should stop now imo.

They're not enjoying and prob. losing into the bargain.

You can motivate y/s by setting targets for some activity that has nothing to do w/ betting and, if you like, imagine that you are making up yr losses that way. It's even poss. to simulate the experience of betting by throwing in an element of the arbitrary e.g. for every worthwhile activity you do properly, award yourself a number of points generated randomly on a calibrated scale.

You move up levels after you have done what you want to be doing repeatedly and in a disciplined way. It gives you what you're addicted to in betting w/out the risks to your mental and financial health.

might try and cut down the midweek stuff next year.

it's true, this place can eat time, which isn't good even if you're doing it for a living.
Report FINE AS FROG HAIR • November 29, 2011 12:50 PM GMT
Your trouble is vep that you are continually searching for "good value " bets.
That is extremely time consuming.
Therefore find an easier way to bet profitably.
( now just let me guess what you're going to answer, if at all )

I'm sure that (evening things out) I lose to people who spend more time on here and win off people (or their agents i.e. high st. books managing liabilities) that spend less.

Things are where they are b/c I am happy w/ the trade-off I have made between bf and my own business. The utility of my betting (the amount I am making plus the pleasure I get from betting and watching horses) is enough for me to check in once a day and devote some significant time to making an opinion-based book (initially) for the major days' racing. Most of this has to be a leisure activity i.e. comes out of non-work time.

As other posters have suggested, there will some skilled winners for whom bf eats into their other time. If you don't enjoy betting any more, it might be a good idea for you to refocus.

(If it was all numbers and trends and overbought positions and mispriced likelihoods of runners reverting to trade in a range for me, I don't think I'd be doing it).
Report FINE AS FROG HAIR • November 29, 2011 1:17 PM GMT
Btw folks, for anyone who is time poor, do what I did a few years ago.
Give up watching recreational TV. ( I now only just watch one news program in the morning and one in the evening).
The world will become your oyster.
Time to read, to play, to bet - whatever you want.
It's absolutely freeing.

Confused  Are there jobs which are not time consuming ?  We are the slaves of money, fact.

It can be done, as many say on here in reference to apparent gambling success.
Report viva el presidente! • November 29, 2011 2:49 PM GMT
dunno how on earth you think you know what my betting strategy is, fafh.

but to put your mind at rest, I generally have no opinion on value, and spend no time at all looking for value bets.

I thought you were one of those " value " obsessives.
Must be getting you mixed up with those that are.
My apologies dear sir.

Going to stop betting mid week except top meetings no more bets at the lower grade racemeetings. I may even trty to do what I used to 1 big bet a week on a Saturday, still used to lose but it would take longer.
Report smithy91 • December 2, 2011 5:47 PM GMT
on jan 1 all my bets have to be trades and everything decided pre-match or pre -race so don't have to worry about outcomes in play.

Dont know about giving up, like a punt, always have but certainly want less time on betting sites, funny thing though is my mobile phone seems to have gone dead[as in no longer getting a signal for phone or net], might bestuffed, been like that for 6 days, only works spasmodically, i used to be on betfair , 365 and ladbrokes all the time, but in last 6 days hardly had a bet, only when on computer, maybe a pre match bet , or in play but funny thing is in those 6 days have kinda missed a lot of games and sorta lost touch too but have survived just the same.ANYBODY CAN.

It is habit , can be a bad one, i reckon the in play betting is the timetaker, you sit and sit and wait, sometimes to achieve nought,if you were a fulltime punter then being here is just the way it is but if not one needs a balance between gambling and other things, simple as that.
Report mikenz • December 3, 2011 1:17 AM GMT
ps........in reply to the heading no i dont want to give , but striking a better balance [definetly?] is.

just like i said before about time on inplay, bet at halftime on that argy game, 1 more goal, wait and wait and wait then at 86 minute, bet on no goal then you guess it, last kick of the game, goal.....moral of the story, all that time to achieve nought , true fact.
Report acquiesce12 • December 3, 2011 9:40 PM GMT
so nobody is really giving up,

nay
pls explain what you mean by:

I just meant if you are a professional here, or just plain unemployed, this site would be where you'd be likely to spend most of your time, either doing it for a living or trying to, so if you're here too much it can have adverse effects on alot of things in your life, physical health for example, bad posture, poor blood circulation etc, not to mention betting is not a sociable activity, it's better to be working with people not machines sop to speak.
Report abolo • December 3, 2011 10:25 PM GMT
Now you make yourself clear.
Yes you have a point, online betting is a very lonely activity. I need to concentrate if i want to perform and so isolate myself for long hours. I speak less to my wife and lost some friends since i do that.
I bet exclusively on tennis and it's very hard for me to do something else if i know there is match going on. So i find myself to spend more than 15 hours a day to bet on tennis in the heart of the season.
But i don't mind because i love sports so the time pass very fast for me. And it's more lucrative than the poor 1k a month jobs i always had.
I always force myself to go out to walk everyday for at least one hour, you need that to keep a good health.
Report acquiesce12 • December 4, 2011 12:38 AM GMT
i'm not on betfair as much as I used to be abolo hence the delayed reply but with the tennis part, yes I was like that too, not 15 hours a day but alot and in end decided betfair is not going anywhere and I can't do this whist i'm young need a job away from computers, good luck next year with the new tennis season, best sport to trade on imo.
Report abolo • December 4, 2011 1:29 AM GMT
Yes i was on football for a very long time, switched to tennis and enjoy it, i find it easier.
I should have study seriously when i was in university but i didn't, so found myself with little jobs, that's why i involved myself totally in sports betting when i saw i was starting to have the skills and the knowledge to win some money (after many years losing). But it's always better to have a real good job if you can find one and bet just for pleasure and additional income, good luck to you.
Report acquiesce12 • December 4, 2011 2:53 AM GMT
thanks abolo good luck to you, betting for a living is a skill as only 2% are in that bracket, you're in the 2% so it seems, well don if I put my mind to it I could do it full time but like I;ve said, maybe when I'm a bit older and poorer lol.
Report flatliner • December 4, 2011 3:34 AM GMT

you pro on here abolo?
Report abolo • December 4, 2011 8:24 PM GMT
I don't like to call myself a pro, frimpong, because i think it's a bit ridiculous when we speak about gambling. I always loved sports, watched it a lot and after years of losing money betting on it i learned gradually how to win. When i saw i could make more money in betting than with my low-payed jobs i started to do it full time. But betting is everything but a job. Markets are changing, players too, places where you can bet too (ex. : PC charge, new laws in some countries), so you can lose your edge any moment and have to find new ones. Betting is something i do now because i enjoy sports and it works quite good but maybe it will end one day so i will be back to a day job.
