from Mirror 2008.....

The pale-looking punter anxiously watching the horses line up on the bookies' TV does not look much like a confident, smooth-talking TV presenter.

And as Jeremy Kyle sighs and throws away his betting slip when another nag fails to deliver, the controversial agony uncle is for once lost for words.

At his local William Hill, where the self-confessed former gambler pumps £20 notes into gaming machines while waiting restlessly between races, it is a sight fellow punters are used to.

A source said: "It's sad to watch Jeremy wasting time and money at the bookies. He appears on edge whenever he is gambling.

"People see him regularly three or four times a week at the local branch. It is something he needs to sort out. The guy we see in here so often, sweating over his choice of horse or greyhound and glued to the gaming machines, is a world away from his public image as a debonair TV presenter."

Kyle's first wife has told how he frittered away £70,000 and ran up £4,500 debts at the bookies and on betting phone lines when he was at the height of his gambling.

And during three visits to the bookies last week, Kyle, 42, showed he is still a keen punter.

On Monday, he pulled up at William Hill in Ascot, Berks, in his £80,000 BMW sports car.

He spent three hours inside and made large bets from a roll of notes. He regularly dashed to and from his car to make phone calls.

On Wednesday Kyle strode into the bookies at 2.30pm, opened his wallet and flicked through a wad of £20 notes. He was on first name terms with the two staff members called Simon and Dylan. They brought him a coffee with two sugars, calling it his "usual."

Kyle - who has repeatedly told the 1.5 million viewers of his ITV1 show about his gambling - exchanged nods and jokes with fellow punters.

He backed a horse called Venice Road in the 3.15pm at Chepstow - but as he watched it drop away he sighed and shouted in frustration: "Great Jesus!" He was handed another coffee.

At 3.45pm he pulled £10 from his wallet and put it on a greyhound. That lost too. He turned to his friend, shrugged his shoulders and laughed nervously.

He put £20 on a greyhound at the 3.48pm at Hove. It was another bad choice and Kyle angrily threw his betting slip on the floor.

Next it was back to the horses. Kyle made a £120 bet on the 3.50pm at Chepstow. But it was another loser. And when a horse called Leading Article won, he asked: "Who had Leading Article?"

Kyle bet £20 on the 4pm at Market Rasen but his horse fell at the first hurdle. The race was won by Heir To Be. He quipped. "Heir today, gone tomorrow!" Finally, in the 4.10pm at Lingfield, Kyle got a first winner. He celebrated victory by doing high-fives with other punters. With renewed enthusiasm, he returned to the gaming machine and began feeding in £20 notes.

A few minutes later he jumped off his stool and said: "I've won £180!" But then, after a spell of feeding in cash for no return, he confided in one elderly punter: "This is not going well."

During a race at 4.25pm, Kyle got more and more frustrated as it became obvious his horse was failing. The 4.35pm at Market Rasen brought more bad luck as Kyle's 20-1 flutter Mr Fluffy disappointed.

Just before 5.30pm he left, after telling one fellow punter: "I'll be in again tomorrow." As he headed for the door his middle-aged friend gave him a consoling hug.

The next day Kyle was back at 3.45pm. Another punter was at his favourite gaming machine and Kyle joked about that with staff as they handed him his coffee. He settled himself at a different machine and fed at least £80 into it to play roulette, winning nothing.

Eventually he shrugged his shoulders and sighed, said: "OK lads" to the staff and left.

The controversial Jeremy Kyle Show has been branded barbaric by its critics over its willingness to let guests air their problems and grievances. A judge described it as the "human form of bear-baiting" after one man head-butted his wife's lover on the show.

Kyle's first wife Kirsty Rowley claims he weaved an intricate web of lies to cover his gambling when they were married.

She said he took money from her bank and racked up thousands of pounds in debt.

The dad of three now lives with second wife Carla Germaine in Winkfield, Berks.

Kyle's manager said: "Jeremy in no way has any gambling problem. He has a love of horse racing. He enjoyed Cheltenham week. He has no more of a problem than anyone else who goes horse racing or to any other sport. He is a West Ham fan and goes to West Ham.

"Jeremy has openly spoken about gambling. He has no gambling addiction whatsoever and no gambling problem whatsoever.

"I don't think he needed rehab for gambling in the past. I don't know. It was so long ago.

"I don't see any need to speak to Jeremy himself about this."

this is ridiculous - it isn't necessary to hold a torch for Jeremy Kyle to think it utterly vile that someone has masqueraded as a punter and hung around his local shop earwigging and noting down every comment he made.
pretending he was getting superstressed as he 'nervously took another ten-pound note from his wallet'  - he could do that all day long.

There are no successful television hosts that can make a living from gambling too my knowledge except of course for all the ones that host tv games shows which are gambling of which Jeremy hosts one now but of course like all questions the answer will always be relative to the conditions of the question or statement and in no way concrete.Cool

When Jeremy states there are no successful gamblers he wagers this statement safely knowing the odds of a professional gambler stating him wrong on national television are so small that its a safe bet and much, much, much safer than the ones he used to place in bookies in his past.Excited
