Thanks but ive seen all that. They end up telling you to upgrade to windows 7 which involves a couple of hours in addition to having to tranfer stuff to an external disk. The whole idea is for you to get a new computer imo.

Before July you could simply download it. There is a download of it for "multiple " computers. I wonder whether that would do the job ?

Really? I upgraded to sp3 the other day with no trouble
|

download the SP3 ISO and burn yourself an update CD then.

I would have thought that if you have a vanilla version of xp installed then you should be able to chieve what you need just by getting it to do a windows update...only issue might be the version of ie that is on the pc...but windows update will sort that for you as well....

Cat you will be able to install SP3 if you already have SP2 but not if you havent.
|

Ah, I see. You mean the whole download isn't there anymore?

Swear windows update was withdrawn for XP computers in July. They are making things difficult on purpose.

I've just rebuilt 3 xp machines and the updater is working fine for me.

Really ? Well the fvckers are still pushing updates my way as my comp was automagically restarted at least twice last week as a result of 'important security' updates from windows. Ah well, Windows 7 beckons for me soon I reckon though I do like XP and will keep it on at least one comp.

They are making things difficult on purpose. howard, my knowledge of these things is zero. Having said that, my local PC shop advised me to buy a new windows 7 laptop. Save a lot of p!ssing about......apparently. And at under 400 quid, may be good advice?? |

Googling seems to show several other sites with the download.
I don't have any clue as to which are safe and which are not but might be an avenue there? |
|
By:
stew thats good advice for you im sure. Lori will have a look at that. I can easily wipe the hard drive done that many times.

howard, one more bit of 'advice'. Since windows 7 started it takes me 30 mins to sign on. I'm with AOL, so might be unrelated.

Are they not still trying to push it (or more probably SP3) as an optional update on windows update for XP?
They still to an extent are likely to support XP for years to come, they have not switched update off, I downloaded XP updates this week. Know what you mean about 7 though, 3 steps forward, 2 steps back with it. |

And sometimes I think 5 steps back ..

Just checking , you will keep getting updates on XP if you already have SP2 and SP3 installed. If you just have SP2 installed the updates finished in July. Correct ?

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=28 This looks like the right link for SP2? |
|

Very much doubt it howard. Have you just got updates switched off? There was a site that used to give service packs etc via an app. Autopatcher .. but site looks a bit stale. Are you sure you want SP2 not 3?
Tbh given all the 100000s of people who have to re/format reinstall periodically etc MS would be mad to withdraw, I'm really surprised you're having such trouble. You can normally also download the entire package so you can stick it on a CD-R or something with your backup disks if you think you'll need it again. SP2: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=28 SP3: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=24 As they say they are bigger downloads BUT if you've plenty of bandwidth, you can as I say put them to one side. Oh wait Gin has already given you one, woops. But I've typed this so .. ;) |

i run windows xp, sp3, firefox 3.6... works fine, any reason why you need google chrome..

Anyone that has continually updated their XP computer will be fine. But i have wiped everything and then reistalled the basic windows XP. You can only install SP3 if SP2 is already insalled.
Ocean i was formally having a bit of trouble with firefox as the flash player was crashing. Seems ok now but it was handy having google chrome which has flash player on board as standard and then i could use firefox without flash. Also you need SP2 to get the Ray V that you need for live RUK. |
