You would need to know what your edge was , and how many bets you could expect to get on per month.
400 bets per month --- £100 per bet --- 5% edge = £10,000 profit in 5 months.

Given that he's even put up that opening post, I'm guessing he doesn't have an edge and wouldn't know how to identify one if he did. So with that in mind, Paul's suggestion gives him the best chance of succeeding. Go to RP's tips table and look for a horse that's going off at around evens and that's being tipped up by 8 or more of the tipsters. In the long term that's obviously a losing strategy, but for a one-off it's more or less a coin toss that he makes his money. Since I seriously doubt he has any well worked strategies, any other approach will only end up losing him his money.

So would I Coolhand. (Well actually, I'd prefer to make the money with a series of small but hopefully sensibly worked out bets.) But then surely neither of us would post such a stupid question?
On the 8 tipsters thing, I did write those down every day for almost two months, and while the strategy lost money over that time, it only just lost. Backing the 1.5-1.9 shots when they got napped by almost every tipster did come very close to producing success. If somebody was a clueless goon who wanted to double their money without knowing anything, that strategy would give them a much greater chance of success than making their own selections.

Better to put it on a red or black spin of the roulette wheel than a horse, yes you'll be getting poor value at evens for a just over evens shot, but choosing a horse is probably a bigger gamble.
Trader11, if you know anything about identifying true odds and getting matched at value you could double your 10k in 6 months comfortably. Or even using a method I've posted before (laying 0-0's to red up, which has been a gold mine over the last few weeks) would achieve that, not for the faint hearted or fair weather punters though :)

LordB Slow and steady is definitely the right approach, not one or two lumps which if they fail leaves you nowhere fast.
As for the tipsters, I sometimes look at those tips where they are all in agreement and try get it beat, can often provide some nice outsiders, there was one race last year where everyone at the Racing Post seemed to be onboard Hanoverian Baron at York (i think), just after it ran around behind Alainmaar, i looked and looked to get it beat, but i couldnt find anything, ended up backing it early doors at 10s, plenty got stuck into it and went off 6/1 maybe, won easily.
But i definitely take enjoyment in trying to get a horse beat, especially a short Fav .

Not very sensible, with no regard to the method of selection. and no real idea what price it may start.

Paul, I'm not explaining further about the 8 tipsters thing because I've got the nasty feeling you're going to start looking at it as a possible betting strategy...
