Does it not strike you as odd that Listowel has had racing for the past 4(?) days, with valuable prizes, for both Flat and Jumps trainers, some trainers will plot their horses year around one race at Listowel, if you are just going into the markets with a minimal of effort and a small amount of research, then im not surprised your getting your fingers burnt. Even if you came out of the Festival with a small amount of profit then you should count yourself as very fortunate.

Not really A........Just a tired LAZY bet ....when I LAY!

It was a small field race IN IRELAND!

Going was in between ....and that really means I SHOULD NOT LAY OR BACK ANYTHING IN SUCH A RACE........

Believed if GOING was more HEAVY than SOFT that the lay would not win......but older more experienced horse jumped well ...and other 2 were not that great at jumping ...The 2nd would have won had going been truly HEAVY!

IF I was gonna bet in that race I should have BACKED 1 of 2...and left it at that!

Was in strong forum early on ....catching 20-1 winner/ a 33-1 sp 2nd ...almost won........then a visitor arrived at house! got sidetracked....was not concentrating 100%.....rushed bets on a LISTOWEL race and ,FOR ONCE , only backed 4 to PLACE in 2.45 ! I usually back em to win too.....but bet was so rushed and had to get back to talk to visitor that I only backed to PLACE! ON THE LOOSE wins at 33-1 SP and I miss out on that.

From memory..... early on got the 20-1 winner, then the 2nd at 33-1 followed by 1st 33-1........so it was "strong" form.....

Frustrated at losing out on the big odds winner...towards end of day...when ahead......I was in a CHASE MODE ....and layed 1 horse ( FIRST ONE ON DAY)....in a small field chase in IRELAND ....and of course it wins.Cost £ 47.70. A STUPID bet for me who knows LAY bets are a no no! In last race of day at 7.20 I go well over staking the race ....on AW at night.....and both main selections ran stinkers of a race, and I had lumped on the PLACE bets and lost over all £ 86.40 on race !

I know I need full concentration on HORSES, but just got knocked off the zone I was in early on by the visitor...........then the mind went astray towards end of racing! It really shoud have been a very good day .....but due to what happened it became another losing day on HORSES!

Luckily the FOOTBALL bets come off ....eventually, as took an early HIT with them too of about £78. Therefore over all LOSS on day was OK......but still a very frustrating day when I was well "IN THE ZONE" early on!

I've again decided acornel that I need to concentrate more on HORSES during racing .....so I will be keeping my posts down to minimum during racing TODAY.

Hope you get some good results today.....and watch out for AYR as now some HEAVY going there !

Keeping off thread seems to have helped me A on HORSES. Only last race where I was annoyed at losing ....was nap and it ran a stinker! So stopped HORSE bets after that....and concentrating on FOOTBALL now.

ND47's suggestion makes a lot of sense. I do US racing, and there're so many races coming along every few minutes that if you get the chasing mentality there, you can flush your account down the pan in double quick time.

So what I tend to do is to sit down every now and again and look over the races coming up in the next hour or two. If there are any ones that stick out, I make a note of them and come back later to check out the odds. Most, though, I just pass straight over.

If you're betting 'real-time', it's very easy to convince yourself that the race coming up in a couple of minutes contains a brilliant selection - even though, deep down, you know it's a marginal bet at best, and that you shouldn't be playing it if you want to make money in the long term. Somehow, a race coming up in half an hour seems ages away. And it's easy to convince yourself that the upcoming race is the best chance of making money you're going to have in the near future - even though there're probably much better options coming up later in the evening, if only you cast your net wider.

If you're looking over a whole bunch of races, you tend to quickly dismiss the ones that aren't up to scratch. What you're left with are a few very viable propositions spread over the course of an evening. You're picking selections on merit, and not because they're the best of the chances coming up in the next ten or fifteen minutes.

Funnily enough, I find my strategies work less well at the weekends - particularly on saturdays. In my case there seem to be a lot of stakes races and the like, and I find it harder to determine the form on those. Horses which look as though they can be discounted often find a performance I couldn't predict from the form. As far as I can tell, you're going on other factors (like the movements in odds, perhaps), which maybe have more significance with a saturday crowd. Or it could be a coincidence, of course..

Very good result on horses (+60 euros) until US races when the first HIT came in. This is "normal" as I already said that an US races hit is expected after ~25 winning bets in a row.

I would have a question regarding Kelly stakes for LAYers ... is someone using/experimenting it?

Second HIT on US races last night ... this one hurts more than the first one :-(
I start asking myself if it wouldn't be better to change the staking mgmt plan from Kelly to Fixed Liability.

Eg. I LAY odds between 5 and 15 with a bank of let's say 1000 euros and an edge of 8% ==> in case of Kelly/4 when I put my bet the backer stake corresponds to 2% of my bank = 20 euros ... it means that if I lose at odds of 4 I will lose 4 * 20 = 80 euros ... but if I lose at odds of 15 then I will lose 14*20 = 280 euros ... do you see the difference?

It's been quite a long time since I read about Kelly, but didn't the calculations for that partly rely on knowing what percentage of your bets were winners?

Personally I'd stick to fixed liability until you've had a good few weeks of sturdy betting with your system. Although I look forwards to being contradicted by somebody else who'll tell you why Kelly is exactly what you need to be going with...

Oh Acornel, on that Emerald race that you got stuffed on, I assume you were laying Brady's Kat? Be careful when it comes to laying horses that have only run once - particularly when that one race happens to have been a win. On paper that lowly maiden shouldn't stack up here, but horses often improve second time out, and you have no real way of knowing what it is you're laying. Plus, since this was over a longer distance, you really had very little to go on. It's fine to lay those horses when they're short, but this one was in double figures. Always be wary of laying an unknown factor at high prices.

Solid result on horses today. No important HIT, almost all strategies performed well including the BACK one.

As I have the "infrastructure" for automatic betting on horses I am trying to get more info about greyhound races (history, odds, ...). There are many similarities from technical point of view between the two sports so it should not be difficult at all to start few strategies on greyhounds as well.

Break-even today ... but on horses I lost about 25 euros on UK races mostly because of my LAYing low odds in WIN market strategy ... you will see that in the last 6-7 races of the day the faves won almost every time!

Added few new strategies on US races and greyhound races ... this might be dodgy because I don't have enough history information in order to define/verify my newly added strategies ... but I think it worth a try.

On US races, contrary as what Lord Bobbbin suggested the other day, I am BACKing low odds in Place market

. Last night the result was poor mostly because I did some mistakes re the stake management plan but we will see how this strategy will perform in a long run.

Important HIT on horses today ... greyhound are still performing quite well. Quite disappointed because it was the strategy that performed the best until now that has registered an important loss today.

Horror day yesterday with too many HITs ... about to claw back a part today but still ...

Hi Acornel. I'm currently on a self-enforced holiday from the forum, but I've still been keeping up with your thread, so I thought I'd pop back briefly and give you a few words... (Whether appreciated or not!)

It's important you don't get discouraged about what's happened. I suspect the problems are in your systems not being tested properly. You're extremely diligent, and you definitely have the work ethic and the ideas needed to succeed. But unless a system is tested thoroughly, you have no way of knowing whether it's going to work in the real world or not.

I imagine your testing methods go something like this: You take a load of form and results, put them through the wringer and then see what trends emerge. You then come up with a series of rules and you make that your system. If things appear not to be working, you bring in new rules and modify the older ones so that your system continues to produce good 'results'. Is this familiar?

If so, don't worry about it - all of us who experiment with systems start out this way. (Well, okay, maybe not Catflappo but..) The key is this - until you've clarified your rules and set them in stone, you haven't done an ounce of real testing. Once (and *only* once) you've determined exactly what your system is and precisely what parameters you'll be using (which types of race, number of runners, what points lead you'll insist on, which odds you'll be looking for etc.), you're ready to start proper testing. And that means subjecting the system to a brand new set of races.

If you now test the system with a large sample of completely new races, and the system seems to be making good money without you having to modify the rules in any way, then you may have the basis of a good system. However, what you'll usually find is that, when faced with a new set of data, the system suddenly stops working. It's amazing how many times a strong trend appears from one set of data, but then dissolves as soon as it's tested against new stuff. As I say, almost everyone who tries creating a mechanical system comes up against this curvefitting problem, so you shouldn't feel discouraged.

However, it is important that you don't commit money to a system until you have laid down all of the rules and then tested it thoroughly against new data (as many months as you can). If you can test it for a few days or weeks without putting in any money (hard to resist the temptation, I know) then so much the better. The fact that you seemed to be coming up with new systems (the greyhounds, for instance) almost overnight suggests to me that your testing procedures aren't thorough enough.

Also, if I can offer one little piece of advice: Making mechanical systems that earn money week in and week out is very difficult. That's so even for somebody with vast experience of a market. However, a related field you might want to explore is creating statistics that you can use to determine where there's value.

In the UK racing arena, for example, there's very little information available on trainers (how well they work with horses making their debut, which types of race they seem to have the most success in, whether their horses do well after coming back from a lay-off, whether the trainers are good at winning with horses who have just been bought for their barn etc.). These figures work well enough in US racing, where they're freely available to those who bother to look at the form. In the UK, where such statistics are very hard to come by, I imagine they'd be worth a lot of money if played in races where a trainer has good percentages (30% upwards, for instance).

There are plenty of other situations where you can compare the horse to its competitors and then come up with some percentages that tell you how well it should do against that field. If you explore these avenues, I'm sure you can come up with some interesting statistics that will give you an advantage over the typical Betfair punter when that factor is particularly strong in a certain horse or in a certain race.

Again, don't be upset about what's happened. Many of us have been there, but I see you as being one of the strong-willed intelligent systematic types who can come through the other side and create something worth relying on. i feel like ive tried 10.000 ideas but the fact is i dont have the patience lordbobbin sitting at a pc all day is getting to me

i feel like my minds a rollercoater i explore am idea something goes wrong then ill get pissed off bin it ry anoither idea get pissed off bin it repeat process

its not healthy sittin in front of a pc writin down stats unless im going to get some where believe me the ideas ive tried are crazy some of them

i was thinking there now maybe i should lay outsiders back short odds but then ive said theres no pint we know what will happen

maybe if i can jsut be patient and spend a two weeeks or so writing down stats but its stressful wiring details of every fave that goes 2-1 at the 2 minute mark before race start really is messed uo and my minds so messed up i cant read form properly anymore i really dont know how can people win day in day out yes im sounding like paulme

Paulme syndrome? Well you want to get rid of that Dev! It's going to be a scorcher today, so perhaps you should go for a swan around the park or something, and just clear your mind for a few hours?

It is difficult if you can't program or don't have a way of electronically recording the form that's coming in. But which factors are you writing down?

odds beetween first two favorites form figures a field rating where i would add up the number of horses that finished in the first two last time out and divide it my the number iof horses to see if there was a relation but that kind of stupid becuase theres horses dropping class that could have finsih 6th of 8 lto in a better race pace so they would still be a threat lenghts like how many lenths the horse won by last time out etc

i dont think there are any mechanical systems there was a horse the other night at mountaineer park look a dead cert to place it went off at 1-5 didnt even place the bridge jumpers got stung all form said it would place the only factor i can think of it not placing might have been it was sloppy but if horses like that cant place then do we have much hope i know the horse would not have been value to place proabbaly im usining it as an example

there was a team this morning started off 1.36 all form pointed to them winning there now 2-0 down all tho i did see something strange they were 1.90 after like 20 mins or something with no red cards

Was that horse the 5. Big Thompson in R6 on Monday night? That horse looked like it ought to be the best, but it was way too short. Its last race had been good, but the three before that had been a little indifferent (poor Beyer figures) and it wasn't coming down in class. Its one performance on a sloppy/muddy track hadn't been great.

On the other hand, the 8 had a brilliant performance in its one sloppy/muddy race, so that would have been a good horse to put up against it - it came 2nd. You couldn't really have backed the newcomer (who won), since its first-time-starting sire stats weren't great, and the workouts were only adequate. Nonetheless, first-time starters in a Maiden Special Weight always need to be taken seriously, particularly if there's money coming for them. The 1 also had competitive figures and could possibly have won.

The fave was likely to win if it repeated its performance from the previous race, but it was an inconsistent horse, and if it regressed slightly it was going to be vulnerable - its other three Beyer figures probably weren't good enough to win it this race. At those short odds, that's the sort of horse worth laying in a race where few of the horses have any real form, and anything can happen.
