Investor , i still can't fathom it out though , this happens with sport scores where one score occasionally out trumps everything else.Or the next 100m world record breaking 9 seconds ,or some other crazy time . But with 6 billion people you'd think the ages would be a bit more uniform . next 100m world record breaking 9 seconds ,or some other crazy time .
Weird .

The western civilizations populations have the longest average longevity and the poorest country Afghanistan has one of the shortest average lifespans, what could be the other factors apart from medical care I wonder, lets debate?

bf fanatic - Afghanistan , different o African countries i know ..but the expectancy in brought down by those living to only 30 or younger ,fair enough ...
But once you reach 70 or 80, you need proper medical care and attention ...something possibly lacking in Afganistan

Lol good point, here are the many factors that will increase a populations average life expectancy
1.....medical care 2.....sanitation 3.....welfare system 4.....security(wars and conflicts) 5.....good supply of food 6.....parents having children at older age 7.....low altitude above sea level 8.....education 9.....control of diseases and vaccination.
most of the above and some missing factors are found mostly in the most advanced western countries and envied and sought after by the third world!

I remember that french old biddy at number 1 having her 120th (I think) birthday party. sat there with a small glass of something or other and said: "the good lord seems to have forgotten me".
also served van gogh in her village shop, iirc. incredible to think about.

note how all the 10 over 122s come from third world countries. this is actually about documentation as much as age.

Response to Coachbuster. Of course their are bigger mysteries in the world than ones you outlined, such as....What is the meaning of life? Is there life after death? And lastly and most profoundly.....how did fecking Kerry Katona ever get on tv.
Answer these three simple questions my child and you will have gained the peace and contentment only gained from the incite of one who trully knows our world.

Only 9 or 10 men on that list (90% women) that's surprising.
I think the average life span for women in the UK is now 82, and 78 for men.
I've always been quite interested in the subject because I was brought up around death (parents run a funeral parlour)!
It actually amazes me how long the human body can survive for given its massive complexity, all the things that can go wrong don't bear thinking about.
I think I remember reading once that a man has about an 18% chance of reaching 85 once he gets to 65, and a women has about a 25% chance.
