my excel skills are basic and i know some of you have good knowledge so hoping for some help
i simply want one calculation to be applied if the number in say cell A1 is positive ((A1/100+1)), and a different calculation if it is negative ((1-(100/A1))), I suspect it involves the 'IF' function which i have yet to use

IF is pretty easy.
the format is =IF(condition, true, false) so for you it would be =IF( (A1/100+1) larger than or equal 0,calculation 1,calculation 2) larger than sign doesn't usually work on this forum, but use that instead of the words |

I misunderstood, it would be
IF(A1 larger or equal to 0, ((A1/100+1)),((1-(100/A1))) Might be wrong number of brackets. Have fun with your american odds arbing. |

thanks lori - it is obviously american odds, trying to take the arbing a bit further with negative % middle value analysis but wont bore you any further

Just in case anyone is interested you can do this by using Alt codes. Just make sure Num Lock is on, hold down the Alt key and enter the code number for the required symbol on the numeric keypad, then release the Alt key.
