i don't doubt that it happens, and that people make a lot of money from it. what I don't understand is, who's on the other side of it?

whose money are they taking, and why don't they stop putting it up?

It's more about being front of the queue ahead of the other shrewdies.

They also trap people in the net with the 5 second clock (5 seconds on top of being 5 seconds ahead of the pictures means I have to submit my bet 10 seconds before a point is played on my screen or I get picked off.)

you see, this is what i genuinely don't get. i can see people getting picked off once or twice, but surely they have to look at their losses, realise what's happening and stop putting money up.

so is there a constant new supply of people getting caught out, and if not, why don't in running markets dry up?

this isn't a loaded question meant as polemical foreplay btw. I've honestly never understood this and am interested in other people's take on it. watching markets live you see people continually putting up large bets that get hammered moments after they become terrific value, and it makes no sense for it to keep happening.

I think people really are that thick viva.

They probably just think they're continually unlucky.

People submitting bets during play may not know it's during play and they don't always fail to get on. They'll almost always get on if the point goes against them, never get on if it goes their way during the countdown and may get on if their bet hits the queue before the point is decided.

no, I'm talking about people putting up big offers in between points that get taken during/after the point. xK at 1.16 when that price is going to 1.05 if player a wins.

which is a nice 0.65xK profit for whoever's got the fastest pictures and fingers, but how many times can it happen to you before you wise up or run out of money?

even the first world war generals stopped sending men over the top eventually.

people lose on every market and if you take tennis as an example the market nearly always has the minimum spread so "mugs" are probably losing as slowly on that as anywhere.  It depends how many times they are dipping their toe in and out.

If you take darts as an example (which is similar) the spread is much bigger such that a mug will lose quicker, the gap between points almost non existent and liquidity is much lower as a result

They'll be okay ; happy with their 40% and opening up new accounts with different IP addresses as they move from one place to another.  Punters and position traders on the 60% band will find it very tough.  Leaves a bitter taste

betfair have absolutely no incentive to get rid of them coachbuster now that they're getting a 60% cut of their profits.

There's more cheats on tennis than anywhere else because of the popularity and the number of distinct odds changing moments. The spreads are only tight if you always bet during breaks. If you bet such that you're behind the clock while the balls in play the spread's about as tight as betfair's morals.
