Trevh, even if I have 50 bets per week to win 2137.50p per week after commission, that still gives me an annual profit of £111.150 per annum.

I'm doubtful if that srategy would ever take me down to 2% commission, and I'd be free of the PC charge.

Having said that, you make a valid point, and one point I'd like to make is this. Now that Betfair have been privatised, don't be suprised if the PC charge goes up to 25-30% in the next two years. Also, don't be suprised if lowest commision rate starts off at 6% and the weekly decay rate goes up to 20%. I may not be right on all three, but I'm sure I'll be right on one. (nap)

Can't see the middle one happening stewarty but if they think that they can make more money by setting the pc higher then they surely will, and why shouldn't they?  Likewise the decay. But bear in mind there is an optimal value for these things and they will have thought carefully before settijng pc at 20%. Raising it to 30% might generate less income.

Spot on cat.

25-30% isn't quite 40-60% is it!  Think quite a lot of people anticipated an increase at some point, not many expected it to be this huge though.

On 9/9/2010 I was at a Key Customer Council meeting at Betfair Towers. I asked the specific question if there was any plan to increase the level of the Premium Charge. The reply was spoken in a reassuring tone - "absolutely not". Now who can we believe at Betfair?

I think this move was a direct result of the new German betting laws and the expectation that much of the rest of Europe will follow with something similar.  They didn't know or expect this on 9/9/10.

At least there's one thing we all know, and that's who will be rubbing their hands today......

there is no new german betting law. existing one expires at the end of the year and a new one is being discussed right now but the initial proposal is likely to be dismissed by the European Court of Justice

also federal state Schleswig Holstein has announced to open its gambling market. this is a radical move, it would severely undermine the efforts of the other states and could induce them to follow suit to not be in danger of losing all of this business to Schleswig Holstein

as of now any anticipated change to the german gambling market should be one for the better

Perhaps some of the big hitters on here might  go and test the waters elsewhere for say, 30% of their stakes? If  they don't get matched they can always come back and give BF all of their buisness?

I have said this here before and elsewhere.

"Empires rise and fall, history demands it"

BTW I'm still in shock. [;)]

slarti, it wouldn't surprise me if some vc comes knocking at your door in the not too distant future. I have a pretty good idea how much a bf clone would cost.

Commission rates are reviewed periodically and have been amended twice in the last six years to reflect what we believe to be a fair and competitive price for the service provided to the vast majority of customers.

No doubt I'll put this thread back to the top within a year......
