@kenny if you lay that much at SP you will move the price.
If you pop-up the 'market information' graph etc when a race is in-running (ie after the SP has been determined) it shows the total matched on the event and the runner both on the exchange and at SP.
Looking at the last at Worcester today, (ok it's a bumper in summer NH but it was to hand) £283k matched on the favourite on the exchange, £3k at SP.
SP being 3.64 that implies about 8k of layers' liability, so your 500 would be signicant - it'd move the price out to about 3.8, unless the longer predicted SP attracted more backers.
Maybe I picked a bad example, but you can do the same for yourself on the type of race you'd be inclined to do your laying on and see how the numbers work there.

i thought that may be the case mate. so best to lay in the last few seconds then?
If you want to lay a beast I would advise the last two minutes. Or, if you want to lay a horse at say evens to risk 500, you could always wait until after the off, (depending which distance the race is) you might get matched at 1.75 for example.
There's a lot of swings and roundabouts, the horse might drift out to 6/4 after a furlong, you will still get matched, but the obvious pitfalls are there for everybody to see......

@Kenny - The BSP also matches unmatched bets just before the off around the current price. So laying just before the off could be mean you actually get matched with BSP reconciliation, but only at your set prices (i.e. you aren't going to increase you liability from those requested).
I personally don't think £500 would make much of a difference for horse between evens to 3's. Higher odds, possibly. But there isn't an exact static amount of money looking to back and lay, it's growing all the time so even though you may be a new significant layer, there is a good chance new backers will come in too as @longbridge says. What I'm trying to say is that in the long term you won't effect the price dramatically.

Canny, a different scenario. Say there's a 6 runner race with the outsider being offered at 26 and you fancy it. Stick your 500 on BF SP and it will be returned at 18 or less. (nap)
(That's if you get matched)

thanks very much for the replies chaps. some interesting food for thought. i will only ever be laying the favourite after having backed it at a higher price, (that's the theory anyway) it would appear that my best value call will be to lay seconds before the off.

Canny, I've know you for a while now. I wont ask if that 'loan' went down well on here, however......

Does this mean you're going down the trading route??

I've always gone down the trading route stewarty since I arrived here years ago. Can't afford to take risks when sole income is a meagre works pension, although the latest plan is not a guaranteed profit as in backing timeform selections early for and laying later for eg. I seem to recall the loans conversation, although not sure which loan we were discussing. I've had several. lol.
