Win or place? Small prices or big? Top class races or low grade? Any going preferences?

I started off place laying at between 1/2 and 2/1, with a preference for soft going. Had a good run, but lost most of it in the last two weeks. Starting to think I should stick to Class 1 races.

Still trying to find an angle with laying. Laying favourites to a fixed liability for me.

A good start but wait for the inevitable. It could start today or tomorrow or next week but it's out there just sitting there waiting with a funny little grin knowing it's going to get you.

bix from a maths point of view you are right i kmow this from past experience.
but i am very selective with my lays as this proofs at the moment i can only lay certain priced horses
but hopefully as the bank grows i will be able to branch out further afield which will make things easier
from the start i was under no illusion that it was going to be easy, but at the moment its going very well
its turning into quite a challenge now and makes me study harder lets hope it continues good luck to you also

I'm down loads place laying this month, but if I'd laid them to win, I'd be well up. Thinking of changing my strategy. Only 2 bets today. Both 3rd at about 9/2. Sad

Laying is the way to go. Been doing it since the site started and never looked back. Learn how to price up races and it's verging on a goldmine.

I have been laying in play, i have found it pretty profitable, been using an in play software though where you can see the traded prices on the horses in rapid time an then can see which horses are dropping off so you can lay them for a near guranteed profit! i am on a free trial at the minute an hopefully will make enough to buy it out of the trial!

The average horse player on Botfair lays bigger prices than he takes.
As the racing markets on here are basically a zero sum game the average horse player cannot win even if NO commission were deducted.
BOtfair's own figures indicate that less than 2% of players are regular winners on here.
Unfortunately the average BOtfair horse player here has no chance of winning long term.
Keep scrupulous figures,
Add up the commission you pay.
Take note of the hours you actually spend here.
Then do the maths.
It will make for disturbing reading.

DO you have any data to back up that statement?

Because on the face of it, it looks mathmatically impossible.

But then most people don't know what average means (pun intended).

"The average horse player on Botfair lays bigger prices than he takes"

If you were to look at all the even money chances that the AVERAGE horse player on BOtfair backs and lays you will find that the lay price will be bigger than the back price. He will lay 2.08 but take 2.04 for example.

"It will make for disturbing reading."

I know not if you yourself actually win or lose. What I do know is that that the vast majority  of people who play horses on here have no earthly chance of winning.
There will be talented individuals who without technology or reliable inside information will be able to win,but there will not be many.
As with online Poker where people kid themselves that they win but the figures show that most lose, the simple exercise of logging wins and losses and then examining the results will as I stated make for disturbing reading for most people.
