I think I'll get a lot of replies from people who profess to be professional gamblers.
5 out of six people on Betfair lose, I hope that I can get an honest reply to this question. I don't mind professionals replying to this subject as long as its in context. Thread was put up to gain an incite into the average gambler on here. Of the 15% of people who do make a profit only a tiny proportion, say 2% of the membership are in all likelyhood making a living from Betfair. Many of the other profitable 13% may only be making buttons. The thread would be a gross distortion if only... one after another person came on here and tells you he is a professional I'd like to know mainly what the 98%, who arent professional's experience of Betfair is? |

P&L is one figure, but that's meaningless, I prefer the "lifetime net deposited" figure, which is a true meaningful figure. At the end of the day, unless people actually withdraw the money they've not really made that money.
I'm a £3 punter mainly. Used to be £2 but it's harder to get to even green after an initial £2 bet because of minimum bet restrictions. I've been on betfair for a couple of years now, in total I've deposited about £150 in total. I bet mainly for enjoyment but I have a horrible form in-running. I end up greening away my winning bets but chasing and making worse my losing ones. I'm trying to get myself to stop betting in-running so I can better judge my tipping but it's hard to do. I mostly make money on football (despite not enjoying the sport much I tend to listen out to the "man in the pub" and oppose it) and give it back on cricket. |

One thing that cannot be disputed is that the introduction of BF certainly evened up the playing field wuite a bit between the traditional bookies and all punters, professional or not.
I would have to say that overall the smallish worlwide circle of winning punters has increased rather than decreased, by virtue of the likes of BF. |

How many of you make a profit or a loss on Betfair
I think you'll find that 99.9% make a profit or a loss. |
|
By:
Ive been back on betfair since april, took break,am ahead a bit since then but well behind in total, been here a year now but since exclusion from games losses have stopped for now, games are bad, very addictive, had same issues on other sites but seem to have things sorted.
I actually bet for fun but serious fun as in wanting to win but hope to keep going forward from now as in no more deposits........seems to be working for now, long may it continue. |
|
By:
very unlikely to ever receive accurate figures as those who win will be proud of how they do and will want to share (boast), while those who lose are often embarrassed and so will either stay quiet or lie which is why every time this question is asked it appears as though betfair is full of winners.

Made a loss for the first 3-4 years, around 8-900 quid. Stopped for a while and studied the concept of the exchanges, which somehow went right over my head at first, was using betfair as you would use a bookies. Moved into trading, as the speil was impressive, but although I was making consistent profit, became boring after a while, making pennies... not the golden eggs as they say. About 2-3 years ago moved on to mostly laying correct scores, was great for a while, then became so unpredictable that it became unplayable.. not sure if my luck ran out or what, but everything just went pear shaped. Now it's just laying horses, and so far is going quite well. I just about manage to make around 30 a day now, and since the start of May this year have turned 30 quid into just over 900.
If anybody wants me to put up my figures, just ask. |

That's how it is, JBHA.. some encouragement for the OP.. it can be done.
My figures are small fry for the bigger boys on here, I have no doubt about that, but this is my hobby, as I also work full time. Stay in the comfort zone and it does become easier. |
|
By:
as i said, people who win will be far happier to reply than those who lose, even though the OP specifically asked to hear from those who are losing.
|

Im losing £5k down since April 2010 the worst thing is I was 2k down until January then pulled it back over the next 2 months to be in front. Then since March I have bet like a mug. Now trying to turn it around if I get to 10k down then Im giving it up.
|
|
By:
in the last 2 years since ive been online betting have lost a lot, more on quick games, some sport so for now i judge how i do based on deposits,if i get them down to none a month instead of 3 4 5 6 or whatever then i think ive got right
|
|
By:
small gains instead of big losses, sounds good to me

JBHA..
How many of you make a profit or a loss on Betfair That's the OP question. |
|
By:
no moves - good thread ,nice to read something different on here.
no shame in losing small amounts , keep the faith buddy |

You must treat your betfair balance like your bank account. If you had a bank account of £100 and after a year it earned say 20% interest after tax thats a massive increase. So if you had £100 in your betfair account and at end of a day you increased it to £120 you have to believe you have worked miracles!! Its all money management, discipline, patience and psychology. You are operating in a global marketplace. Try telling the wife that.

Well said.
|
|
By:
I agree with what you said Mordin however you have to remember the 1 key difference between a bank account and Betfair. That is that you don't have to put in any work with your bank account.
You have to balance in the amount of work that you put in to get your returns and try to make some kind of judgement as to whether you are likely to have a big enough bank in the future for it to be worth it and whether your current system will scale up and all the other factors that are different for each individual. Unless it's all just a bit of fun of course!! |
|
By:
That is do you have a better and more profitable way than gambling to spend both your time and your money, which you also can stomach doing day in day out.
If not then you're stuck on BF, for the time being of course, till you can marry a rich woman or man. |
|
By:
I make it pay here but truth is I would be better off on Dole. My living expenses are low and that's why I continue with it even though I barely scrape by. Thing that keeps me going is I get slightly better each month after doing this for nearly 3 years.
Basketball unders/overs is my fave market and the one in which I have most confidence. Would love to find an edge in football and I do keep researching this trading the 1-1 draw. |
|
By:
I think this thread has died a death so I'd like to sum up what replies I got.
Twelve people replied not including myself. Four said they lost overall on the lifetime of their account. Two people said they made it pay on here. I Got Six replies from people who either refused to give or forgot to answer the question. 33%, lost 16%, won 50%, seemed a little reluctant to admit to whether they won or lost. Strangely if you add 33% and 50% together you come just about to the total figure reckoned to be the amount of losing punters on Betfair. |
|
By:
not sure if i answered but i am up on here overall although i am a total mug punter with no gambling "skill". i do love gambling though
![]() ror is right about the lifetime withdrawal figure being the only figure worth bothering with really. what has surprised me since jan when i joined these forums is the people on the football forum who claim (truthfully or not) to make 1000's in a day. i cant help but be sceptical |
|
By:
I make a profit no moves - but imo it's a job, so the real question is, do I make a decent wage?
|
|
By:
I would say the opposite in that the lifetime figure is not worth bothering with. It takes time to learn the trade, and it's not unlikely that the learning process will cost you.
My first year I lost to the extent that I went back to work in the real world, then tried again a year later and haven't looked back to the extent that since Aug 2010 I've withdrawn money every week and haven't deposited since Aug 2009. So for me it was all about learning my strengths and weaknesses which takes time. |
