Well studying horses isn't easy, certainly nowhere near as simple as studying football, tennis etc.
A whole range of things need to be taken into account such as the course, the distance, jockey, conditions, strength of the field and so on. I'm no expert on horse racing by any means but a little research can go a long way.
Timeform is quite useful, and to a lesser extent the racing section of sporting life. Racing Post is arguably the best but not everything is free on there. Even the racing section of a newspaper can help you get a feel for things.
GL if you decide to put a little research into picking out losers.

Bert is correct that Horse Racing requires far more research, certainly if you are intending to bet on almost any UK race as there are about 5,000 horses that might run in them.
http://www.racingpost.com/
Go on there and type any horses name into the search box and you will get all it's previous form.
But to research an 8 runner race properly looking up the form like that would take about half an hour .And even that is not enough as the form itself does not tell the whole story a lot of the time, so ideally you will have needed to have watched their previous runs. So having enough knowledge to bet race by race is really a full time occupation (unless you are exploiting a flaw in the market that has given you an edge, in which case you don't need to know any form at all) .
Betting race after race without knowing anymore than a cusrory glance at the form figures will give you, is , i would say, the worst thing you can do in gambling. You just have no chance whatever. It is actually worse than playing FOBTs.
So unless you are prepared to spend hours each day studying horses that - in abilty - are as good as pub football teams, then i would say stop what you are doing.
To get involved and knowledgeable of Horse Racing i would recommend just concentrating on top class racing only (Group Racing) . There are only a couple of hundred horses good enough to run in those, and so research is much less of a chore .If you watched all of the Group Races for the next few months you would very soon be familiar with the horses that matter, and by the end of the season you would know as much about it as most people on here.

thanks bert/tobermory. am thinking i may just make this a general betting challenge as although i enjoy betting on horses, it is the area i lose the most frequently in!?

bank now stands at £240. lets see if i can get to 300
For example;P+L since start of thread:Basketball: £2.25 | Darts: £2.54 | Horse Racing: -£50.92 | Soccer: £38.17 | Tennis: £137.49 | Tote: | Total P&L: £129.53bank now stands at £240. lets see if i can get to 300
Had a quick look at your thread Paulme. Something I don't understand is your horse racing profits for the days you put them up on here were: +20.92, -13.38, -76.12, +9.89 then finally -42.12
Your thread title says you have started with £60 - therefore which would have mean't your 'bank' would have been all gone at some stage by the third day (let alone place any lay bets)
Likewise with your summary - you have indicated a profit of £130 and bank now stands at £240 yet you only started with £60 ?
All looks a bit confusing thats all. I suggest you start a new thread and start with a sizeable bank like £1000 and look to like you said bet on anything you like.
Good luck whatever you do.

thebert - I was simply trying to say that his horse race results for the first 5 days was
20.92 -13.38 -76.12 +9.89 -42.12
Which means if he started with a bank of £60 he would have wiped it out sometime during the 3rd day as well as he wouldn't have had enough money to actually put up any more lay bets but continued to do so.
Trying to understand what he was doing and secondly suggested he start again with a bigger bank.

shocking day... new P+L since thread began.Basketball: £13.41 | Darts: £2.54 | Horse Racing: -£64.54 | Soccer: £38.17 | Tennis: -£6.88 | Tote: | Total P&L: -£17.30 only nadal can save me now
Now why in fks name are you laying fancied horses in 8 horse fields.
Why not start with a minimun field size of say 12 or 14.
Would you prefer to lay a 4-1 pop in a 8 horse field or a 5-1 pop in a 14+ horse field???
So many horses in the field make it tough to get a run or find a position that enables the horse to win, they get trapped 3-4 wide shuffled back tothe rear or burn up early to get a position.
your last comment, atleats your honest. Now why in fks name are you laying fancied horses in 8 horse fields. Why not start with a minimun field size of say 12 or 14.Would you prefer to lay a 4-1 pop in a 8 horse field or a 5-1 pop in a 14+ horse field?

paulme thanks ocean. i like gambling on horses, i just have no clue
here is what you should do.. pick a race, study it for 20 mins then spend 5 mins writing a paragraph about why you should back or lay.. then 5 mins finding the ideal price and back it.. job done in 30 mins.. for one race
have u tried forums like punterslounge or olbg? some good people there.. read this http://forum.punterslounge.com/f13/horse-racing-glossary-q-57140/
and they do like to answer questions which i am sure u have many [;)]
good luck

Federer won easily, nearly backed Nadal while on holiday to beat Murray but backed out.
In the football season 90% footy 10% horses. On my thread i`ve made a decent start. Trying to turn £500 into 10k.

so you had a bank of 60 today and you were staking £10 on each race.. stake bit high dont you think?
£15 on acca!! thats 1/4 of your bank again.. think of it, suppose you had £1000 would you have stuck £250 on that acca?
Now that you have £11 left, stick to £1 bets... you can build from that..
my two main bets tomorrow will be Rumh in 3:05 Ascot and Lay of Fame and Glory in 3:45 Ascot.. Tax free in 8:10 Beverly also interests me..
good luck!
