How low does one need it in order to have a decent chance of being a profitable layer? I've mine down to 4.6% and I've had success this week but I'm not sure if I can profit long term, is my commission still too high?

Need more information. If you lay both outcomes in a two horse race at 1.99, you can be profitable with 99% commission.
