If you are into football, the fix by Declan Hill is a good read. Gets you thinking about this corrupt sport that is loved .
Report viva el presidente! • April 15, 2011 5:57 PM BST
market wizards a good call. also a second volume called the new market wizards.

both are interviews with financial traders, but absolutely full of stuff you can apply to trading on here with a bit of thought.

author's name is schwager. he and some of the interviewees come across as smug d!cks, but that doesn't diminish both volumes' usefulness.
Report The Investor • April 15, 2011 8:12 PM BST
Yes viva, the second book is also very good. There's also stock market wizards, which is worth reading, but not as quite as good as the first two.
Fortune's formula is a good book too.

I came from a mug punting background and managed to educate myself mostly through books - for me there were two distinct types of books that helped enormously.
1.)Those on the maths of betting that explain the need to be betting into lines w/value. Many out there , I like David Sklansky.
2.)Daytrading books that taught me above all the need for a solid trading plan and discipline. I`ve read nearly all of those mentioned above and found the Market Wizards series the most informative but to start with the more practical nuts n bolts stuff helped the most to ram home that need for discipline.
Moral of the story - keep reading it cannot hurt

If you're looking for a book to improve your gambling, then Moneyball is a must read. It's not about gambling though, so you need to think a little laterally to understand my comment.
Report duncan idaho • April 16, 2011 9:16 AM BST
A great read anyway, Lori...read it 3 times. Always remember the quote about the player who 'had warts but they dont matter'.

Report duncan idaho • April 17, 2011 7:48 PM BST
That is partly because others jumped on the bandwagon, brendan...Red Sox first World Series in 80 yrs in 2004 was built on same principles, i believe. Plus Nick Swisher, who features prominently, had a career-best season with the NY Yankees last year.

Report viva el presidente! • April 17, 2011 10:49 PM BST
yeah, but iirc swisher featured mainly as the type of player conventional coaches were looking for at the time?
Report duncan idaho • April 18, 2011 8:19 AM BST
p29 ''Swisher is a rare point of agreement between Paul's computer and the internal compass of an old baseball guy. He has the raw athletic ability the scouts adore; but he also has the stats Billy and Paul have decided matter more than anything.'

Does anyone remember How to Win More at Racing, by Jeremy Flint and Freddie North?

It's available on Amazon for 1p plus postage, Blackwater. Was it any good?!
