Why is that good news? i see the author forgets to mention the 20% tax to consistent winners as well.
What would be very good news is an american company opening a rival to betfair, not betfair getting more of a stronghold on their monopoly. |

Betfair USA could is set to be up and running by late this year.
also that first sentence doesnt make sense. could be up and running or is to be up and running? big difference. |

Betfair will take a 5% commission on your successful transactions however that can fall as low as 3% the more successful you become.

Maybe the new garish Red White And Blue inplay page from hell was designed with the US market in mind? They could probably jam in a 200x100 pixel animated flag in there somewhere, just to make it even more eye wateringly bad!

I thought that at first but then thought nobody can be that retarded to write something that crap themselves and then post it on here. It's an awful piece of writing. |

or have the opportunity to go against them. Betfair availability for the USA is what I'm dreaming of.

I just don't think it will ever happen. Such a big shift is required in America's relationship with sports betting in general, and that's before we even get to the idea and concept of an exchange where John Doe can effectively act like a bookmaker!

Three problems for Betfair. 1. Internet gambling is illegal in the US. 2. The Yanks will never, and I mean never, put up with the greedy Premium charge. 3. Betfair will have to find a way so the Yanks are exempt from the PC, while still scamming their worldwide customers into paying it.

When the Americans finally get back into sports betting, they're not going to let it all flow out to a poxy island on the other side of the world, that's the main reason they banned it in the first place.

Interesting piece on this issue by an ex Betfair guy
http://www.sportismadeforbetting.com/2011/01/betfair-in-usa-still-long-way-off.html One of the issues that is not mentioned much.... 3 - Who will provide the liquidity? American racing bettors will have trouble embracing the exchange model. There is no fixed-odds culture in the US - it's all about pari-mutuel betting for racing, and handicap & H2H betting on sports. 'Laying' a bet in North America means betting on something to win, so the terminology is all wrong for starters. If Betfair can't tap into liqudity from other states or the rest of their active client base, then there'll be no odds to kick start betting. People who only know how to bet on something to win (at no set odds) aren't going to turn into layers in a hurry. Without significant laying money on the screen, the backers aren't going to get involved and will write it off as a stupid, complicated idea that's too hard to get their heads around. Not impossible to overcome, but infinitely harder if it's restricted to local players only |

As clarification to a claim made earlier, internet gambling is NOT illegal in the US. Betfair owns and operates a business handling in excess of $600m handle on horseracing. It is called TVG and is one of several internet gambling sites offering legal wagering on the sport within the US.

Just in regards to Americans not putting up with the 20% PC crap. I agree, however if Betfair ever opened up there, then they'd probably omit the Premium Charge for US users.
Look at eBay. Forcing every seller to offer PayPal in Australia, but different story in America. |

sports betting is illegal virtually everywhere in the US pythia, and the demand for betting on the major team sports there dwarfs that for horse racing.
and I've yet to see a convincing argument that there's any likelihood the law will significantly change in the near future. |
