Wasn't there a famous one with Henin vs Bartoli that involved massive gubbage. I think she won first set 6-0 or something and was a break up in 2nd and ended up losing. Dunno how much got done though.

By:
Aus v SA ODI when a world record was set in first innings was another biggie but not sure it was anywhere near 2.7mill
By:
Henin was the biggest before, don't think it was anywhere near this though
By:
actually not sure there has even been a £1,000,000 one before
By:
how much got done on the newc-arse game, btw?
By:
About 40k i think . No one fancied laying it.

Wow Betfair must have pocketed some of this.

No one fancied laying it. think it was a little more than that. I traded more than that myself, let alone the whole market! Arsenal 1.01 35,866.36 Back 05-Feb-11 16:30 -35,866.36 Arsenal 1.01 8,033.73 Lay 05-Feb-11 16:34 8,033.73 I initially backed arsenal at 1.02 for £50k and largely traded out. When I saw how quickly my 1.01 got matched though, I scratched part of the position. I was later able to back the draw at 490 and also backed Newcastle at 1000 prior to that. Could have traded out completely for a large profit, but chose not too... The average price I backed the draw at was 5.76, all the way from 490 down to 1.22... |

Yes, just looking it up nearer 400k

the good old "Black Swan"
i feel sorry for no one, they got what they deserved, the lot of them! ultra-short odds its a dumb, lazy bet (learned that the hard way) but i know its pretty fashionable here because i see it being backed all the time even in lower grade events for you, Investor, i would guess/hope that you have the skills for that loss not to represent a big percentage of your bank but when i see 2,7 Million traded at 1.01 it just amazes me, how can they do it? some guys lost big time today |
By:
Yeah, a lot of it will be people lumping on a 'sure thing'.
In my own case I've made a profit both back and laying at the short odds 1.01, 1.02 1.03 etc from 2006-2010. When q1 2011 finishes I'll add these figures to my lifetime total, when I do my quarterly performance analysis. It will obviously skew them a lot. For instance, for bets at 1.02 my 2006-2010 GP backing was just under +£26k, and laying was just under +£6k. The Arsenal game changes that picture completely. |
By:
thats the problem with backing at 1.01, one losing bet will take away all your profits
By:
depends how much profit you made since the previous one

Lori I thought the price was 1.01 after Aus had set the record total but I haven't followed cricket for a while and certainly didn't bet on this game so may have picked it up as a BF myth.
By:
I could be wrong but I think it was 1.02/.03 at halftime (Though very conceivably 1.01 at some other point) because I remember people saying how crazy the odds were as it was a world record.
I'll go digging. |

By:
SA lost a wicket in the first over or two, that should have been 1.01
But they started slogging straight after so it wouldn't have stayed 1.01 long |
By:
liverpool coming back from 4.0 down to win the european cup was a massive 1.01 beater, and a massive 1000 payout.

Going through Betfair's historical records, I think these are the top 10 1.01 gubbings (n.b. the data only goes to a few weeks ago, so the ENGvIRE cricket isn't in there)
759481 29/10/08 Arsenal v Tottenham 577615 26/06/09 England U21 v Sweden U21 509850 17/08/06 Clijsters v Dubois 500561 02/10/10 Nadal v Gracia Lopez 447574 06/07/07 Henin v Bartoli 442803 14/05/10 Australia v Pakistan 420934 28/02/10 West Indies v Zimbabwe 400254 02/04/09 Del Potro v Nadal 377991 05/02/11 Newcastle v Arsenal 353400 27/05/10 Fognini v Monfils Fognini v Monfils is the only one in that top ten that wasn't in-play. Amount matched is the usual Betfair double-count, and only includes 1.01 |

The 1.01 for that was matched before the start.
I didn't add up pre-event + in-play betting so maybe it had some 1.01 in-running as well. |
By:
The Vis/Lori the SA AUS ODI wasn't 1.01 at the break, but it traded at 1.01 after Dippenear was out early, but not for huge amounts.
By:
The 1.01 for that was matched before the start.
Eh? |
By:
We barely see Fed or Nadal being 1.01 before the off even if they play some "nobody" and you are saying Monfils was betted heavily @ 1.01 against Fognini before the match had even started ?????
By:
Thanks Mr Magoo. Very informative. The Eng v Ire game the new leader by a long way then.
By:
What about that Man utd v Everton game this year, 3-1 up in injury time
By:
so presumably england have been involved in 3 1.01 gubbings on the trot?
ireland (match odds) india (tied match) SA (match odds hit 1.01, iirc) |

Just had another look at the Fognini v Monfils data, it looks very dodgy to me, here are the amounts matched on Monfils pre-match:
1.01 353400.6 1.02 391683.6 1.03 503025.92 1.04 251321.06 1.05 201817.4 1.06 142231.14 1.07 117480.82 1.08 137724.36 1.09 156033.8 1.1 110098.26 1.11 62486.86 1.12 57096.66 1.13 113833.52 1.14 117522.58 1.15 227546.48 1.16 264020.14 1.17 190947.22 1.18 118432.2 1.19 31734.36 1.2 60740.02 ...and lots more, up to around 6.0 for decent money. That doesn't make any sense, I suspect Betfair's historic data is wrong for this match. |
By:
oh, and Fognini was also matched down to 1.01 (before the start) according to Betfair's data as well. Looks like their records are junk for this game.

That match was played over two days (it was suspended because of the darkness). So it was turned in-play first day and 1.01 was matched when Monfils was 2 sets up and had a break in 3rd set. Then the match was suspended and it wasn't in-running over night. Then it was in-running again when they resumed the next day.
So 1.01 was matched before the match was turned in-play for the second and final time and that's why your data seems wrong. |
By:
Although I don't have the data from memory Aus/SA was 1.01 at change of innings.
Which was fair enough imo. |
By:
still is the biggest 1.01 loser ever.
