Most hotels also have hardwired cables in the room. Usually connected via the tv or outlet point near it. That would be way safer than wifi but cost a fortune.
If you do have to use wifi in a public place make sure:
a) You have topped up your account / paid for services using cards at home
b) You only ever login to sites which use https login. Not only for betting sites but for also sites such as google, facebook, twitter. Install this firefox add-on

as it will ensure that all your logins are secured.
c) When you get home immediately change passwords which you have used on wifi.
wifi may have weak security, or it may have strong security. Either way packets can be captured and later decoded extremely quickly. You may not find that your account is accessed immediately but a few weeks later once someone has run your captured data through decoding farms. It's a slim chance but the risk is there.

what if you use API with tools like gruss or geeks toy, is it secure or unsecure?
Setup a remote desktop/remote VNC (or something like logmein.com which is free too) to a PC at home. Can have passwords setup in notepad on your desktop PC, and just copy/paste if you're worried about keyloggers or traffic snooping.

If their aim is to make a profit, they could match your funds against bets placed through accounts under their control at very poor prices. Alternatively, they could set up a bf poker account for you and then play against you. If their aim is simply to deprive you of your funds, they could lose your funds against random accounts as above or perhaps via the casino.

They could simply place your entire balance on a losing selection at a low price in an event that has been decided. Anything that was initially unmatched would be snapped up, assuming that the market wasn't suspended within a few seconds of the bet being placed.

I would imagine that 'professional' fraudsters would use rather more sophisticated techniques than I outlined above.
