General Betting

Right, ive had a search, read loads of different articles, posts, forums, but still a little confused.
I understand how it works and everything, and how its calculated, but what is defined as "loosing", or "not winning"
For example, I read one site and it listed all the bets, back = first winner, but then it went and said lay = loosing horse
Now is the loosing horse the horse that comes in last place? or if you lay a bet on Horse X and it comes in 3rd, are you paying betfair or are they paying you? - As you can get each way bets (not on here I dont think) which means you get 1st 2nd, 3rd.
Am i thinking too hard about this, 2nd place is the first looser? or is it you lay bets on the horse that is going to come last?
I understand it for football... as there are only two teams playing which means its either win or loose, but there can be 10+ horses in a race?

Two main markets on Betfair in Horse Racing: Win market and Place Market. Win market - you are laying a horse to finish 1st. i.e. That horse will not first. Place market - you are laying a horse to finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd. i.e That horse will not finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd. It does not matter where they finish - 4th, 8th or last. Win market - must win, Place market - must be 1, 2 or 3. Just to cover myself. Variations will apply with small fields - 7 horses or less and large fields 14/15/16 etc or more - the Place market rules will change. So, check Rules for that race. |

Thanks for the reply Roger OASIS, I am quite new to all this (well I've placed the odd back bet now and again, usually on football win's), but would like to get into this a bit more, and want to fully understand the lay bet 100% before I enter into it.
Right, lets use this as an example: Right, so if I was to put a lay bet on "Bombay Mist" of £2.00... If this horse came in 1st place, I would have to pay Betfair £1,938.00 So are we saying if it comes 2nd or above (3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th....) I would receive £1,938.00 FROM Betfair? |

No. You would receive £ 2 less commission.
If you decide to lay Bombay Mist, offer a price much lower. e.g. 40. If Bombay Mist wins, you lose £ 2 x 40 = £ 80. If Bombay Mist comes 2nd, 3rd etc, you win £ 2 less commission. |

just picture this, you will understand what backing and laying is; Backing - same as walking into a bookie, you bet £10 on Red Rum at 5/1 to win, if Red Rum wins, the bookie pays you £50 and your £10 stake back. If Red Rum don't win, all you've lost is £10. Laying - this time, imagine you are the bookie, some punter comes up to you and bets £10 on Red Rum (5/1) to win, if Red Rum wins, you have to give him his winnings of £50 and his £10 stake back. If Red Rum DO NOT win, you just keep his £10 stake. easy peasy.....so on betfair, your profit is the backers' stake minus the commission. |

well put efren, thats how i explain it when my mates ask. Although you are not "being the bookie", you are putting up money for someone else to win when they place their bet and they usually get it after that. If he doesn't understand it still then there is no hope.
@mesmerised: c0ck. If someone thinks it's "loosing" and "loose" then they are thick as pigs 5hit. It wasn't a simple spelling mistake as he spelt it as the other word in both contexts, (ie. with "ing" on the end too) and "loose" and "loosing" have nothing to do with betting. stop sticking up for numpties. |
