I know I am stupid for doing this, but I laid a bet and then matched my own bet. Surely the system shouldn't let me do that?

Be careful when you make experiments, the cross-matching logic has created situations in which you can lose by matching your own bet.

Unless you happen to cross match it and b-f skim the difference as a nice little bonus.
