I know I am stupid for doing this, but I laid a bet and then matched my own bet. Surely the system shouldn't let me do that?

Careful, now that betfair is public money, to please share holders, they may charge commission on the winning bet when you match yourself[:(]
Be careful when you make experiments, the cross-matching logic has created situations in which you can lose by matching your own bet.
Unless you happen to cross match it and b-f skim the difference as a nice little bonus.
