I've just received my new debit card.  It's gone from a maestro to a mastercard (yes a mastercard even though it's a debit card rather than a credit card).

Now I find I can't withdraw any money on this new card since I've never deposited with it.  Are there any issues with using bank transfer instead?  Is it free and takes the same amount of time?

Mate, the best way to sort this out is simply to phone the betfair helpdesk.

I have.  They said use bank transfer.  And I've just apparently succeeded in withdrawing.  But I don't understand the difference between what I normally do (withdrawing to my card), and this bank transfer.

I've never had any problems with bank transfer just as quick for withdrawing. Just deposit a tenner with the new card then you should be able to withdraw to it in the future

I don't think I'm allowed to withdraw to this new card.  If I deposited £10 then I would only be allowed to withdraw £10.  I do not understand why I'm not being allowed to withdraw to it.  I'll need to ring the number on the back of my card and demand an explanation.

if its debit card you should be able to withdraw as much as you want on to it.

That's what I thought.  I thought this restriction only appled to credit cards.  But apparently not.

First withdrawal to your card must be the same what you deposited, then you can withdraw more. It works for me this way.

I think you'll find that Mastercard are the reason behind the restriction. They made a decision to restrict funds back from any site which was gambling related some years back.  I suggest you open consider opening a 2nd account with another bank if appropriate with a visa debit facility - helps to keep your funds segregaged from your day to day finances as well

I believe BigDeal is correct. You'll need to withdraw by bank transfer from now on, if you continue using this card.

Just deposited £200 using this card.  Now it will allow me to withdraw.  But I assume it will only allow me to withdraw the £200?
Report Cosmic Horizon December 7, 2010 12:21 AM GMT
Yes I can only withdraw a maximum of £200.  Just tried to withdraw £300 and it won't allow me.  A restriction imposed by Mastercard even though it's a debit card.  In other words I cannot withdraw more than I can deposit with this new debit card.  How ridiculous.

I have the same problem with one of my poker accounts being a Mastercard debit.

A bank transfer has never been an issue and takes the same time.

I presume most people deposit with a debit card i also presume once youve withdrawn upto the amount youve deposited you have to use bank transfer ive been doing so for over a year now and its no problem at all. I would be interested to know if anyone can withdraw more than they have deposited onto a debit card. . .

Report Cosmic Horizon December 10, 2010 12:26 AM GMT
Yes I could definitely withdraw more than I deposited with my previous debit card which expires at the end of this month.  But that is a maestro card.

You can still withdraw to the old card until it expires.
