I'm thinking of buying a Toshiba Satellite R630-13T. Anyone got a Toshiba mini laptop & what's it like? Any other suggestions?

My daughter has one.

Not great IMO. Multiple problems I won't list here.

I'm much happier with my Samsung.

Don't buy a sony. I bought 3 for me (top of range), wife and daughter. Every one developed problems (mine multi problems) and their customer service is dire. Vastly overpriced junk. I got a samsung with 3 year on site for half the price which has been more reliable and just as good in every aspect bar sound.

I had a lot of problems with the machine, their customer service was not great and the assistance appalling. Avoid if you have a choice.

Eejit, sound is fine on mine.

What model?
Report Feck N. Eejit • November 1, 2010 9:40 AM GMT
I should've said volume not sound. My hearing isn't great and the top volume on my P210 doesn't match the top volume on the sony laptops. It means there are some videos that I can't make out what they're saying.

pxb, what model was your daughters laptop? Do you mind listing a few of the troubles you had?
I would not buy a sony laptop again. The battery life of the one I bought a few years ago was dreadful.
I have an ee mini pc, but find the performance lacking. It's fine for surfing the web, but videos will not play smoothly if you have a few windows open.
What I like about the toshiba features, are the low weight (1.5Kg), the 4GB memory and the fairly decent processor.
I wonder how the battery will last in practise. I'd usually expect 2/3 of what they quote in practise, so 6 hours, which is fair.

Portege M800

Generally slow operation for unknown reason.

Unable to access wifi. Toshiba claimed to fix this, but didn't. I fixed it.

Low sound volume at max. I managed to improved by changing the factory defaults.

Power cable frayed and had to be replaced. Not covered by warranty.

Part of my job used to be evaluating and buying laptops. Lenovo Thinkpad can't be beaten, quality dropped a bit since Lenovo took over from IBM but they're still the best. Don't get ordinary Lenovo (rubbish), must be Thinkpad.

Ultraportables are x301 and x201 (although they may have been superseded, I haven't looked for a year or so).

Henry, my company used to make all the hardware for Thinkpads, for IBM. The best machines on the market, imo.

I find external usb spreakers help with sound quality quite a bit.
