majority opinion on here that you can really only truly expect to be a profitable punter on BF if you are betting in-running ?
Or is that only a minority viewpoint, but being loudly and repeatedly expressed on here ?
If the former , then where does that leave punters in countries such as Oz where they can't bet IR ?
Up the proverbial creek ?

Why do you get that impression?

Personally I do not get involved in-play other than at HT and I am in profit.

You haven't got that impression ?
I'm surprised.
I seem to have to read it everywhere, if not explicit then implicit.
I'm glad that you don't agree in fact with the statement that IR is the last bastion left for the punter to get an edge.
The mere thought of having to stare at multiple screens intensely for periods of 90 minutes or more ( in football at least) scares the bejesus out of me.
Bit like all traders you see in the dealing rooms of the banks etc.
What a narrow life.
But we're all different I suppose. Makes the world go round.

Btw getting involved at HT is IR betting isn't it?
Many punters elsewhere are not even allowed to do that ?

IMO it means that you can manage your position to take account of what's happening, or simply reduce volatility as I mentioned on the other threads. I don't think it's essential though, each to their own as you say, but the exception being horse racing where the mind boggles as to how someone who doesn't bet in running can make a profit.

I only do football so I can't speak for horses.

I sometimes think about branching out and going in-play because I have seen the number of my bets matched fall quite a bit and margins are getting slimmer in some places but I consider the risks that in-play betting carries to outweigh the benefits for me and it'll probably stay that way until I put some serious work into starting a fresh in-play.

I'd discount the posts on here by people trading in-play 'cos of the massive value'. They back randomly at 2.00 and lay just as randomly at 1.95 and pat themselves on the back. I'd need a bit more assurance than that before I started.

Although in answer to:

The mere thought of having to stare at multiple screens intensely for periods of 90 minutes or more ( in football at least) scares the bejesus out of me.

I have to spend all day doing that. If I only had to do it for 90 minutes I'd be glad.

Both are good in their own ways, it's certainly possible to win pre-event.

You're right it is in-play but nothing is happening on the pitch (unless it's an Indian match where there could be anything from a dog to garden furniture on the pitch)

Or even a bookie settling up his in play first half bets with the players.

Exactly.

Although I do miss it. It beats the other morning stuff they put on (except the Japanese games) and it usually beats the Aus footy as well but that's because they refuse to add more than 6 markets to the Aus games.

I think it's certainly possible on both, but a lot has to do with an individuals outlook and area of interest.

As far as football goes I am pre-kick off & guess it has a lot to do with having won with a certain approach & developing trains of thought from there.

I have a friend who is very good at snooker in play. We spent about 3 hours one afternoon doing it, but I can honestly say it was one of the most painful days betting I have ever had. I learned a lot that day from the experience, but it wasn't for me! Made a few ££ so all was well & good, but I found it to be too tense an experience.

Ultimately, I think whatever the area of betting there will be fundamental errors within the market & if you can identify them before anyone else then all is well & good. Whichever way a market moves due to the weight of money pushing it in a certain direction you ought to be able to find alternative approaches & hopefully step in unnoticed.
