can't quite understand how they get away with it, is there something i'm missing?

they say "cut out the middle man" but the only time i bet with a "middle man" is when i use betfair. when i go to my local bookies its me against him, i know he doesn't lay off or balance his books(certainly not on smaller events anyway), he stands the bet. if i go to the casino, they can't lay off, its me against them(even with their 2-3% house edge. but if i place a bet on betfair its me against some other individual with betfair acting as a middle man taking a commission.

is there something i'm missing have i misunderstood the advert?

Given that this about about the fifth thread on it in two weeks, I'd say you're not alone in your thoughts.

The ad was obviously dreamt up by some ad agency that had little knowledge of the product.  And some numpty at Betfair approved it.

Really they need to hammer home the message that 90% of the time you get better prices on Betfair than with traditional bookmakers.  Even after commission.  Have some independent statistics guy list how many prices are better on Betfair and how many are worse. Have Carol Vordemann select prices at random from two sets of trays like in Countdown and do the maths to work out which is better value. In the ad breaks for ATR simply give the Betfair SP for the winner of the race just shown. etc etc

best post about it was the guy who said they should have bet a pint, the loser handing it to the annoying geezer in the middle, who would then drink 20% of it and pass it on!

There was also a comment regarding them taking bets from the high rollers where the winning punters are actually the middlemen being cut out.

Agree your 14:04 point Management. Is there really any punter out there who views their bookie as a middleman between them and other punters? Whatever you think of Bet365 their adverts are the complete opposite: "lots of in play markets, bet on them NOW". They advertise what their product is good at. Simple.

Not sure I get your other point though - BF is clearly spending a lot of money to try to attract new users. Whether it could be spent more effectively or not is another question, but you can't deny they're splashing the cash.
