I made 50 points profit (only £2 stakes on each) first month. After 2 months I was back even. I was covering 18 races a day, getting around 30 horses a day matched.Thats 1,800 bets in 2 months to still be even.So then the tweaks started. That was 2 yrs ago.Still tweaking to this day lol.
Report tobermory May 3, 2010 4:29 PM BST
This day and the day before last have been the 2 worst since i started , and the one in between wasn't much good.

Report tobermory May 3, 2010 4:35 PM BST
hope not , lol , i'll check
Report TameTheTiger May 3, 2010 4:35 PM BST
Coda Agency 6 into 9/2.Did well to avoid that.
Report tobermory May 3, 2010 4:35 PM BST
no i wanted 5 for that
Report tobermory May 3, 2010 4:36 PM BST
4/1 to be clear

2 or 3 times i 've watched a race without being aware i'd layed the winner, as matched just on the off
Report TameTheTiger May 3, 2010 4:38 PM BST
Tober
You seem to be setting your odds quite low,yet getting plenty matched. When do you load your bets for each race ?
Report TheSnapper May 3, 2010 4:40 PM BST
Yes, that sounds around what I'm up to, in terms of stats. I was laying for many years , off and on, without much success and wondering why it was. Then I realized how much COMMISSION was being deducted from winnings. It really kills any profits. I was (at best) around 5%-10% profitability, but after comm, that was wiped out. Then a bad run would wipe me out. I adjusted my initial book down by 5% and I saw over a few thousand bets how the profitability rose by a corresponding amount. I really is like a casino and you need to play it for a long time with a statistical advantage, but it can be done.
Report tobermory May 3, 2010 4:40 PM BST
Any Given Moment , how the fk did that win :(
Report TameTheTiger May 3, 2010 4:45 PM BST
I think Snapp loads his bets this morning, but Tober nearer the race ? I tried both btw, made no diff.
Report TheSnapper May 3, 2010 4:47 PM BST
Any Given Moment...ouch!
Report tobermory May 3, 2010 4:47 PM BST
I think the timing may be very important, so the precise time is a secret , though what do i know after the last 50 races or so
Report TheSnapper May 3, 2010 4:48 PM BST
normally, I don't watch the races. It makes no difference in the long-run, so why stress yourself out?
Report TameTheTiger May 3, 2010 4:49 PM BST
I used to watch from behind the sofa
Report TameTheTiger May 3, 2010 4:52 PM BST
Are you laying to fixed backers stake,or fixed liability on each bet matched ? I played to fixed backers stake, which meant the bigger odds winners hurt me more.
Report tobermory May 3, 2010 4:53 PM BST
yeah thats what i'm doing
Report tobermory May 3, 2010 4:54 PM BST
Arabian Pearl beat , Autocracy next at Windsor
Report TheSnapper May 3, 2010 4:55 PM BST
I lay to a fixed payout, not to backer's stake. The reason is that I can then lay outsiders without getting killed.
Question: After you got matched on a horse, what did you do? Continue to lay it at lower odds?
Report TheSnapper May 3, 2010 4:56 PM BST
Yes, I have Autocracy @3.5
Report tobermory May 3, 2010 4:57 PM BST
presumably A Pearl was beat anyway as it was 1000, not watched it :)
Report tobermory May 3, 2010 4:57 PM BST
no i only lay it once
Report TheSnapper May 3, 2010 4:59 PM BST
Ahah! From my stats, the profits come from the STEAMERS , not the floaters or drifters. You simply have to take them on (and get pounded some times). It pays in the long run.

Report TameTheTiger May 3, 2010 5:01 PM BST
The early days I'd just leave them.Later on I'd lay again, and again, and again.I had an Irish horse at Wolves (last race on Friday night) take a whole weeks profit once, backed from 8/1 into 5/2,won a short head.Maybe your'e right about overstaking lol
Report TheSnapper May 3, 2010 5:03 PM BST
Absolutely the key...I never stake more than 1%. Good thing today, or I'd be crushed!

enter the market in morning and leave pre-off.................in @15 out @9.....only need 3 races a day.........all green in two and it's wages time........no need to play every race, study ONE race for an hour, formbook, own ratings, own book, price history, market analysis = OWN OPINION ..........back high lay low, couldn't be simpler.......take advantage in the races the bookies don't spend much time on.........forget the big meetings, AW C5 hcaps suit me fine.........remember the punters they like form, hence they back the same ones every time..........its like reading a book, but then again watching these markets is all I've done for the last year and I mean ALL.............no fun in it but I prefer money these days to fun

That's about the offers I was making.Did you read the thread with BTO on ?
Report TheSnapper May 3, 2010 5:16 PM BST
Yes, BTO is a MAN among MEN. I think he has a lot right. He didn't mention much about bank management and increasing stakes, which is also key to increasing the bank week after week.
Report TameTheTiger May 3, 2010 5:17 PM BST
The chance to increase stakes would be a fine thing.

I. Quit...welcome! Although you aren't exactly a bookie (but, then again, niether are we) you also fleece the over-enthusiastic backers in the same way as we do. I imagine you have less volatility each week than a straight backer...and we pay higher commssion, but I imagine that the PC will be a factor for you, but not much for us. I'll have to see when/if Iget to that stage!

Report tobermory May 3, 2010 6:16 PM BST
only the 5th time in nearly 400 races i've got 3 beat and won the huge sum of £5.70

very timely :) Was disillusioned for most of the day with the whole thing, a bit grim when you know you are going til gone 6 but by 3pm the best hope is to avoid the worst day ever. Was doubting wether it was worthwhile as if my average profit per race drops too much then it will just take too long to build the bank.

Very Pleasing recovery, finished only -£1.84

Hello lads,
Good to see the fellow bookies grinding away to steady profits.
There's been some very tough times, and some real good times, but in the end, it always seems to return to the mean profit.
As you know I always lay to ****ed payout amount.

Markets can change, and it's important to keep accurate records and monitor any significant shifts over a significant sample size.

But it's all been going like clockwork for the last two and a half years.
Report TheSnapper May 8, 2010 10:50 AM BST
Hi Beat, Nice to hear from you again. I wanted to ask you about other sports beyond horseracing. Have you been making books on greyhounds, football or other sports? I haven't had much success on greyhounds and I am puzzled about it. I mean, what would the difference be between a book on the dogs and a book on the horses? Smaller field size? Lower liquidity? ANy thoughts about how that would affect my results?
Report tobermory May 8, 2010 9:56 PM BST
how did it go today?
