Morning all.
I have recently renewed my Norton antivirus/security package which came with my laptop. However now I am being continually re-directed to tinterweb sites which I have not requested and the other day when I tried to log onto internet banking I wasn't let in despite entering the correct details, rather I was taken to a screen requesting answers to 4 security questions plus it asked for my secret security question and answer.
I called the bank and they confirmed that they would never ask for all this information, I then tried to log in again with the bank monitoring the process and I gained access to my account. Nothing was awry in the account but I have put a stop on access at the moment until I sort out the problems with my laptop.
I run the windows defender scan but it shows up clear. I suspect that this scan is pish, can anyone advise me what to do to clean the P.C. up and start again with some decent anti-virus softwear, preferably free softwear but if there isn't any available I don't mind paying.
Some lumpy betting transactions going back and forward so a bit concerned atm.

i had norton for 4 years and only recently got rid of it and im amazed that my pc now runs faster..to get rid of norton you need a norton tool to get it off your pc..google it..will take 20 minutes or so get norton off yar pc..
i would download malawarebytes..its a spyware programme..run that also..google it and youll get the free edition.. for antivirus i would suggest Avast..free also.. makes sure you have norton uninstalled before you install Avast.. |

Same here - binned Norton and went to `avast`, its free too !! Use `superantispyware` too !!

Use the other two mentioned then run malwarebytes as well, it's not a virus scanner as such, but it's just bloody good at picking up various nasties

get rid of norton, a terrible package that is a memory hogger and as already said , will have pc running slowly

gingcat...how do you mean clear out??..as in wiping your pc?
do as ive said above and see what the results are..when youve uninstalled norton and installed avast/malawarebytes and have ran a scan see how yar pc reacts..the malawarebytes should pick up whatever spyware has found its way onto yar pc..run avast in safe mode also.. if you get stuck along the way,fire up yar questions and ill do me best to help bud. |

The way phishing works is by tricking people into revealing their details, usually after they've clicked a link in an email to a fake website. Norton's can't protect against that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phishing Norton's poor reputation is because of their previous security suites. Their current version is highly regarded. Don't take my word for it, check the reviews online (I use Eset Smart Security btw). Run scans and malwarebytes. After making sure you are on the banks secure website ("https" and padlock icon in corner) you need to change your password. Change all online passwords (after establishing the website you are on is genuine). If you don't play poker on here block it. It seems that is how people's money was being removed if a scammer gained access to their account. |

You're constantly getting redirected to random sites and you went to your bank and put your security details in ?

Same boat as you mate , bought a PC and laptop with norton already installed , 6 months ago i came across http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ which is free and excellent , it immediately discovered a trojan hiding in a file and promptly removed as well as informing me were the trojan had originated from , set this on all 3 machines to run a full scan daily and never looked back tbh as all 3 run like grease lightning and has prevented and dealt with at least 4 trojans along the way ( use it with google chrome ) Add the above to running http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner twice a day once before racing and another mid-afternoon and i've had no issues with betfair or any other site since removing norton , all 3 machines have never run as fast or smooth and it's all for free. Gees, around 2000 infected files, trojans, back door somethings all removed now with avast and malwarebytes. Thanks for your help gents.

good stuff gingcat..it sounded like a spyware problem you had and if so malawarebytes should clear it up..
run your antivirus in safemode and you should be sound. |
