New to betfair and don't understand the reason why there are such big differences between the back and lay prices on offer for same bets?

Are the gaps increasing?
Based on my recent frustrating experiences I have a strong feeling that they are (at least in NBA, NHL, MLB and Football). Has anyone done any research concerning liquidity?
