largest stake is £20k Hewitt to bt Haas in Miami 2000 , massive last minute wind angle when Haas actually considered pulling out and debated with the umpire whether play should start , he was a mental wreck and lost 6-1 6-3 , only made profit of £8k though with price 2/5.
Numerous other wins with a bigger return but from infinitely smaller stakes. |

Was it the wind conditions that made you go in so big just before play was about to start, or were you going to back Hewitt anyway? |

£200 won't do it again the selection a horse lost.
Stick to stakes now between £20 and £50. |

Not plans for a bet on the match tbh as the prices looked about right , my betting partner at the time lived in Bahrain and was also a racehorse owner , he got £35k on altogether as he wanted £15k for himself and that seems laughable now even for a liability of £14k as you'd be lucky to get a tenth of that these days.
It was just one of those opportunities that presents itself from time to time but not a bet type i'd want to get involved with in the current climate tbh , only interested in automated bets and a systematic approach these days , amazing how much the industry has changed in those 10 years. |

Sadly, my biggest was a loser.
As Im asking others, suppose I should admit the madness of my losing bet on Nadal to beat Murray in the US Open semi-final in 2008. It was at a time when I had £5.5k in my betting bank and I was on a reckless streak. Backed Nadal three times at 1.27 from the start, then 1.52 and 1.85 IR but Murray played brilliantly to win the 4th set 6-4 and the match 3 sets to 1. I was even stupid enough to lay AM at 1.41 I just wouldnt accept that he was good enough at the time to beat Rafa. It cost me £1,634. Im sure I also lost £2k backing Tiger to win one of the majors in the US in 2007 (think it was the time Angel beat him), but Ive tried to bury the memory of that disaster. |

2 stick out to me, both losses !!##
Built my bank from £18 to 13k in about 3 weeks (1 of them spells where everything went right) - then one sunday afternoon, couldnt see Coria not beating Gaudio in the french open final, Gaudio big time bottler and Coria at the time was the worlds best on clay by miles !! Bakced at start, cant remember the odds , backed again after he won 1st set, and again after 2nd set. Maybe stuck 7k on to win 1k on average. Then in a matter of seconds his back went and he couldnt serve - they thought he`d pull out and he went from 1.01 to about 9 in about 20 secs despite being 2 sets up !! Quckly traded coz I thought he wasnt gona play on, lost about 4.5k on the trade by laying at 9 or whatever it was. He played on but served like a girl , and promptly lost the next 2 sets in rapid fashion. So 2-2 and he started serving a bit better ,and Gaudios bottling qualities came through and he went a break down in the 5th set - quickly changed sides again back to Coria , only for Gaudio to chirp back to life. I must have timed every bet sooooooooooo wrong it was unreal - ended up where it was summat like 8-8 in the 5th and I was -£6k Coria - £13k Gaudio. Worst thing is , I could have got out level when Gaudio serving @ 0-40, Coria 3 match points and 1.03, and still then greed took over and I stuck with it - never forget it he could hardly walk and Gaudio was serving about 10mph - Coria just went to smash each one for a winner coz he could barely walk , and missed the line by an inch all 3 times , then went onto lose the next 2 games - costing me a cool 13k , and me and mr Coria have never been the same ever since !! I now bet pennies and he doesnt play tennis anymore after having his dream smashed and his mind warped - he never recovered and neither did I ! :-( Other one was at Royal Ascot, I couldnt see Mr Dinos not being placed in the gold cup , he was 6/4 to win, 4/9 to place, thought his stamina would assure him a place, but the race went awfully as he needs to lead and sone crazy korean horse went off at 150mph and hassled him all the way round ,wouldnt let him lead , they both ended up tailing off - and im ocnvinced he`d have won that day was it not for that korean numpty - as the winning horse and placed horses had been well beaten by Dinos throughout that year :-( That was when I was much younger, now im strictly a interest bettor :-) |

Commiserations, Hugh - that bizarre French Open disaster sounds horrific. Unforeseen injuries can be a killer.

Remember that French final very well Hugh tbh , one of the most bizarre sporting events i've seen and just about everything that could happen actually did , Coria went from 2 sets up and cruising to lose 8-6 in the decider

Hugh - sorry to brinbg back unhappy memories but for those who are interested, here's the report that appeared on the BBC's website:
2004 FRENCH OPEN FINAL Sunday, June 6. Gaston Gaudio fought back from two sets down to win a bizarre French Open final 0-6 3-6 6-4 6-1 8-6 as Guillermo Coria suffered with cramp. Coria dominated early on but played the fourth set at walking pace and served with difficulty in the closing stages. The crowd were stunned into silence, but Coria was soon fit enough to twice serve for the match in the fifth set. But cramp, or possibly nerves, saw him waste two match points and Gaudio came through in three hours 31 minutes. Gaudio received the trophy from Guillermo Vilas, who was the last Argentine to triumph at Roland Garros in 1977, before the country's national anthem was played. Coria had looked on course for an embarrassingly easy victory after an hour as Gaudio appeared paralysed by nerves. But it was Coria who suffered with victory in sight and Gaudio hit back to take a tight third set. With the score at 1-1 in the fourth, Coria called for the trainer and had both legs massaged. And to the amazement of both spectators and his opponent, the world number three strolled through the next five games, protecting his injury. After five breaks of serve in the fifth set and with Coria moving without difficulty, if still serving at half-pace, he served for the match at 5-4. That game disappeared to love and another opportunity went begging at 6-5 as Coria wasted two match points with loose groundstrokes. Gaudio needed no further invitation and raced through the next two games to claim a hugely unexpected first Grand Slam title. |

Not me, but just remembered a corker!!
Mate of mine did a £20 acca when drunk, did about 10 selections - cant recall the exact details but basically 9 won and he was waiting of Leeds Rhino`s in the challenge cup for about 3k and this bloke bets like £10 a month, dont recall who they played but the handicap was roughly -74 .... Never looked like getting there until they got about 4 very late tries. Led by 70 with the last play when the hooter went , scored under the posts and the pub went mental (he`d told the world and is wife!!), so its 74-74 on the handicap, kick right infront of the posts, and they let Barrie Mcdermott take it (think it was coz he was only player who hadnt scored for them that season or summat like that) ,last play of game ,and he rushed it and hit the post from like 4yds out. Think it was on BBC and its was very very funnny to watch - my mate was in tears !! |

I had built my bank up from £20 to about £1,300 which had taken me an absolute age as I aint clever enough to trade and make millions.
This doesn't bother me by the way as I enjoy my time on here and good luck to those who are clever enough to win big. It was an International weekend and everything I bet on went wrong. Got in a foul mood and bet my whole bank which was over a grand on England "in play" to win at home to a team expected to get hammered. Make no mistake the fact I was p*ssed was a massive factor in me placing that bet. The stress watching that game was unbelievable as England were not playing well and to add insult to injury the winnings were miniscule even if it won. Thankfully it did and from that day I grew up betting wise with staking plans and walking away on a bad day. I was one of the lucky ones. |

I also backed Edinburgh to win a rugby union match , think it was against glasgow. Im ashamed to say I put £2000 on @ around 1.03 to win £60 before kick off. It was on a Friday evening , watched it on bbc wales, Edinburgh led by 3 points going into added time and Glasgow kicked a penalty from their own half to draw 13-13 :-(
