Report buzzer March 22, 2010 12:02 PM GMT
If you're now in employment just start with an affordable amount as your bank and build it up over time. You'll then know if you have half a chance of succeeding, good luck.

Why don't you remain in gainful employment and not mess up any career options you have as a safety net and continue on Betfair in your part-time?

You're either doing something right and will win or you're kidding yourself and you'll lose leaving yourself out of work to boot.

See what you mean .... I just want the freedom of doing what I enjoy and am good at .... can only have a go on weekend really and have no time to make real money from it . Saturday is always the best day anyway but maybe too I dont like being told what to do and whats right
Report tinkyvinky March 22, 2010 12:35 PM GMT
I had no money at all when I decided to give a go. Had some knowledge about betting and an option to go to UK and work in a factory 12 hours a day if I fail to make money out of betting/trading.

Interesting that at the start I could make money fairly easily just because I needed it every day (high concentration, superb discipline). Later on when I had some saving from betting/trading and then the problem appeared in a big style.

I could not make money cos I did not need it for my casual costs. Took me about 8 months to get head in right direction. It was feck hard to take the profit without a real need for it.

Started with 400 euro.
Report Hugh G Rection March 22, 2010 12:39 PM GMT
v v hard to keep discipline, and dont think coz your ok now you can do it long term - doing it to pay the bills affects your decision making and puts immense pressure on you - I doubt I could do it , unless I had a huge bankroll to fall back on.
Report 3753 Cruithne March 22, 2010 4:31 PM GMT
€10k.
Report Contrarian March 22, 2010 4:52 PM GMT
One of the biggest misconceptions on here is that you need a certain largish amount to make it as a pro, or that having a large bankroll makes it much easier to make money.

If you're trading, then you need next to nothing to start up.

For 98% of people trying to make it, even if you gave them a £100k start in their Betfair account, they'd fail to make anything over a 12 month period.
Report hgodden1 March 22, 2010 6:11 PM GMT
It depends wildly upon your strategy. To be honest if you were ready with a workable strategy then you could probably answer that question for yourself. If you're talking about trading then some could do it with as low as 500, though many traders would need and use a lot more, and certainly you would need more in the case of backing or laying

Report Trevh March 23, 2010 12:14 AM GMT
It's stupid to jump in with a large bank and think that will bring success, it absolutely won't. The way forward is to start with a small bank and build it up, that way you never get out of your comfort zone as you get used to staking larger amounts and dealing with what that entails with regard to getting matched and greening or redding-up, so stakes can always be 1% (or what ever) and you're not simply throwing yourself in at the deep end and splashing around before sinking. If you haven't confirmed that you can expand a bank, the last thing you need is to start with a big one.

I'd agree with catflappo anyone asking how much they need/what stake %'s etc is ready to go 'pro'.

Anyone with a viable edge should easily be able to work out what they need to make it work for them.

£700 .

I relied very much on a fairly large overdraft/bank loan/credit card to keep me ticking over for 6 months to keep me afloat .

There's no point waiting to quit your job if you can get a loan in the meantime .

For all these people thinking of "going pro" with very small banks or next to no money ask yourself this: if you're that good at gambling/trading and confident of future success why haven't you got any money at the moment?!!

Report Coachbuster March 23, 2010 12:53 PM GMT
Warro, it may be that a prospective pro gambler has been busy studying/paper trading/small level betting for some time, and not actually making a large enough profit to exist on wholly.

And that wasn't me calling you a wally at the end ;) :D
