Whilst Louisiana's judicial system spends its time trying to prosecute British executives for breaching their idiosyncratic gambling laws, more children than anywhere else in the world are serving life sentences without the possibility of parole.
"A recent report by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch reveals that 2,225 child offenders in the United States, a whopping 317 of which are here in Louisiana, have been locked up for life without any possibility of parole. Fifty-nine percent of child offenders serving life without parole in this country are in prison for their first criminal offense, and an estimated 27 percent were sentenced for felony murder-that is to say, they were involved in a crime during which a murder took place, but they did not take part in the murder itself. Sixteen percent of child offenders serving life sentences without parole were between the ages of 13 and 15 when they committed their crimes. "

So whats the link to gambling then?
Report Knight Rider September 27, 2006 3:48 PM BST
It does seem a rather odd comparison. If murderers were all running loose in Louisiana then perhaps the pursuit of gambling execs could be seen as a poor choice of priorities.

But the fact they are tough on young murderers means they shouldn't be arresting people on gambling charges? Sorry don't get that one.

sweeping rubbish off the streets seems fair enough to me. Perhaps we should give them all probation to screw up someones elses life though eh, ? Now thats a gamble I would rather not take.

Lets make a big country with haves and havenots, dont share the wealth with the inept and challenged but spend it on millatary and agencies, celebrate ignorance, give everyone a gun and lets them go at it..Then pass some mandatory sentencing laws so judges have no disscresion, make prisons a private enterprise, come around and gather up the debris.,and lock up as many as possible..Then provoke the hotheaded around the world,so when they strike back you can pass some "patriotic" legislation and divert more billions to the industrial war complex, put you5r agents in the media, conglomorate the companies so they all fall into line and do not decent and keep the truth buried, make a fandagled flag and away you go into the apocolpise.

when is Louisiana law coming to the UK, sounds very good to me, lots of locks and no keys, the way it should be

Anyway its rather emotive to say 'imprisionment of children'. A 15 year old who takes part say in an armed robbery where innocent people get killed, isnt a child in my eyes, he's an armed robber.

Simple really

so that 15 year old has no prospect of developing and changing for the better, maggie? and you would apply that to every single one of these young teenagers regardless of the story behind the event or any other possibly extenuating circumstances? Pretty cold.
Report Snake Plissken October 2, 2006 4:10 PM BST
If there were "extenuating circumstances" it wouldn't be "murder 1".

Yes very good post, I like you you said provoke the hotheads when the provocation was stationing troops in Saudi during the Kuwait war. Plenty of places have legal guns, but most without the problems of the US. It won't matter to you tho, you take shots @ america every chance you get.

foggy, some smackhead robs a bank, shoots an innocent bank teller, for instance, not deserving of a lot of confidence re future maturing into a sunday school teacher imo

All criminals accuded of violent crimes SHOULD be steralised imho, male and female, that would reduce the prison population in years to come. Criminals tend to breed more criminals.

Oh Im such a liberal :-)

and I love talking law and order, really winds the do-gooders up. Wonder if they feel the same when one of their family gets mugged or beaten up.

Would they be overflowing with understanding, empathy and optimism for the crimms then ? Methinks not somehow.
