It would seem quite probable from the symptoms you descibe that the laptop is connecting to someone elses network.
You don't mention the OS but in Vista it is possible to see all the available connections using ControlPanael-Network SHaring Center-ManageWirelessNetworks. Have a look there, You might have 'Automatically Connect' ticked on this spurious network |

Thanks, I'll have a look escapee.

This is getting so confusing now.
When I originally hooked the router up I assigned the secured network as Robmp. After various problems and bumbling around ( I'm not techy) we had changed it ( I thought) to another secured network called by my sister's name. What I see in the network icon is me being connected to my sisters secured connection and an unidentified one. But in 'manage wireless networks', there is only 1 connection and that is the old Robmp one! Lost me. |

try right click on the little tvs bottom right and sellect connect to a network that will show you all networks your laptops can see and the strength of signal
By:
Yep, it is showing that i'm connected to a secured network under my sisters name.
By:
if all laptops show the same they are all on the same router ie yours if you see any others with weak signal they could be some house next door so just ignore them you will continue to see them but not connect to them
By:
open a command prompt
start --- run ---- Open: cmd (with administrative privileges) type ipconfig in the command prompt and paste up what you get |
By:
alternatively
start -- programs - accessories, right click on command prompt and select "Run as Administrator" |
By:
ill leave it to you DS you know more than me if your going to config cheers
By:
I've got that ipconfig/all up mate, but i can't seem to copy and paste the way I usually do.
By:
right click the top of the window title bar, select all, copy
By:
sorry, right click title bar, edit, select all
By:
inidentally, you're only connecting to one network if you've only got one wireless network card. you're getting a funny with vista and your router which makes it appear that you're connected to multiple networks

Ahh, i see Dstyle. I just thought logically, that as my lappy is the only one getting probs connection wise out the 3 ,and that was the only diff i could see ( multiple networks) i assumed that was the prob.
Dangerous to assume :D |

i'm not sure what the exact problem is, but it's a problem plenty of other seem to have
http://www.vistax64.com/vista-networking-sharing/130056-vista-incorrectly-sees-multiple-networks-cant-connect-inte.html you could try this suggested** http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-500 i used to get it a lot with my old netgear router (incidentally if you've got anything above 10mb broadband, the older routers can't handle forwarding the packets quicker than about 10mb) but it's gone away since i replaced it. |
By:
tyvm DStyle, i'll have a look at those links. Not sure what my mb is.
By:
router is brand new wnr2000
By:
Not sure whether its wise to use that 2nd**link DStyle.
I am actually connected via multiple networks and the piccy in that link denotes no internet. Is it safe to procede? |

By:
kill the one that isn't the one you recognise. it's not irreversible
