annoying pop up.anti virus vista 2010

Very likely a scam, which is in itself a virus.

Go to virustotal.com and upload the file it claims to be infected. That place scans with 41 or something different scanners, but only one file, so it'll check if it's a false positive or not.

After that, run a scan with a real virus scanner, even a free one, to find out what's causing the popup, probably something along the lines of fakealert will be the problem

and ffs don't click the popup and download anything

will do that.dont think i have downloaded anything yet but as i have just clicked x to close.damn thing wont go away though.it does look genuine though...

If you right click on an EMPTY part of the task bar at the bottom and start up task manager, you can go to "applications" highlight it, click end process, and close down the window that way.

It will also show you under "processes" what is running, and you can close it down in there too, although it may be harder in there to work out what it is

have downloaded this and it is now doing a full scan of ths system.does this remove the virus or is further action needed after the scan ?

had this problem and had to take back to factory settings .lost everything

mine was called personal security looks like a official download from windows, be very carefull its a trojan that can come down with adobe like mine did, fkg nightmare it infected the computer for weeks had to pay to get it removed by a shop and its clever enough to stop you downloading removal software, get some decent anti virus,i now use kasperspy about £29

Once the scan is complete I rebooted and all was gone :)

downloaded malaware as advised and got option to remove three trojans which i did.
noticed that my anti virus had expired a while back which probably caused the problem.
installed avg 9 and all seems fine now
it was nasty and it would have been all too easy to download something awful by accident because it llooked like official windows stuff.it even brought up my control panel with loads of red on it
bit of a awake up call for me really as i only use my laptop for betting and household finances
could understand it if i spent my time downloading porn or something

the best free one imo is avast, have a look mate, I have used it now for 2 years without problems

happened me awhile ago, had to ring microsoft to get them to remove it!

looks like it was a virus as u say but it has now been identified and hopefully removed. have since run a scan and nothing untoward was detected.no more pop ups since eitherr but will still be on the lookout mind just in case it does come back.but looking very good so far

posted the same problem a while ago. do a system restore to a date when you know your computer was working ok

i had the same virus. AVG(free download)sorted it.

Apologies mine was called XP 2010.Tried AVG and it didnt work.it kept poppin up looked just like a windows program.
Someone on here advised the system recovery,worked a treat

sounds exactly the same but my laptop has vista loaded rather than XP .will try a system restore if i find the virus is still there.its a really nasty virus because u could swear it came straight from windows official messaging.a real trap for the unwary which is the nature of these vruses i suppose

when i contacted them i was told the following:
-came from a social networking site such as facebook or myspace
- delete temporary internet files REGULARLY as thats where it had to be deleted from (therefore where it was saved)
i normally delete temporary internet files regularly anyway but this seemed to somehow get onto my system anyway

the malwarebytes mentioned above will solve it but you need to run an update on it prior to asking it to**the problem, once you have downloaded it look for the updates link

if you just download malware and run it it may not clear it out and it will return when you reboot

might be worth running the scan again at least once more even if all looks ok when you reboot anyway

as also mentioned this is a scam virus which wants you to click on the fake vista download, DON'T DO IT, you'll just have a bigger problem

the pop ups can be temporarily blocked if they are annoying you by going into your task manager, then processes, then delete "av.exe"

this won't cure it, it will just give you some temporary respite from the pop ups

btw i had it about 3 weeks ago, came from a russian newspaper site for me

seems to be hunky dory now with no pop ups.have installed avg anti virus and run scans so fingerrs crossed..think it may have come from a video streaming site p2p as thats the only potentially 'unsafe' site i have ever visit on the laptop as far as i am aware

Someone obviously goes to a lot of trouble to come up with viruses like this so why do they do it and what advantage is it?

That one attempts to trick you into believing you have a virus, and if you're remarkably dumb... which surprisingly many people are, you buy their "virus remover" for $40 or whatever (which of course does nothing)

some *affiliates* were recently revealed to be making $5 million a year from these fake security scams. that is why they do it.

as for the danger of social networking sites and the size of some of these operations take a read about koobface (gettit?) , take a look around dancho danchev's blog and check out some of the analysis work available via pdfs done on koobface. it is astonishing stuff.

My Laptop got this virus when I was browsing tinypic.com ( I think ).
Its a very slick and official MS looking piece of software which can install itself via media player codec updates.

I removed it by doing a system restore to a point a few days earlier.

I've read of problems with removing it with standard 'malwarebytes' type of programs, because it also
ammends the registry and these programs do not restore the registry back to prior to the infection.

I would reccomend a system restore to a prior date and only run a trojan remover after that.

If you have run the trojan remover and are now unable to run any programs, then create another account on the PC with administrator permissions and either delete the old account or google
something like 'Anti virus 2010 can't run any programs' for instructions on how to**your registry.

the daft thing is there's lots of stuff on the web about how to get rid of this and it's associated clones, but i can't find anything which says "run this bit of kit and it will stop infection"
