I am receiving letters from the SLC asking what I'm doing and how I'm supporting myself financially. I initially wrote back and said I am presently supporting myself with income that free from taxation, but they are demanding evidence of this.

They also want a 'box' ticking on their form:
a) employer details (obviously N/A in this case)
b) confirmation of income from self employment
c) confirmation of unemployment - if so, evidence of how how I'm supporting myself financially
d) confirmation of 'other' - and evidence of it

Any advice from others that have been in a similar situation? I don't wish to go down the self employment route, so am torn between option c, saying that I'm unemployed and living off savings and option d - 'other', and saying exactly what I'm doing.

If I write back and say I am gambling for a living, will that be an end to it? What evidence can I send to prove this?

Advice and thoughts appreciated.

It won't be an end to it, but you'll probably put them off for a while.

They are the pits of the Earth and even when you're in the right they won't leave you alone. It is however best to be honest with them all the way through imo.

They hassled me for 17 years for money I didn't have to pay back, I kept count of how much paperwork I cost them and eventually paid them when I was sure they'd made a huge loss on the deal.

I ended up in court twice (well once really as they didnt bother to tell me about the first time, which didn't aid my cause any when I didn't show obviously) and caught their staff out blatantly lying on several occasions, to the point where twice I had people in tears when I asked "Is this message being recorded? I do hope so".

The court assessment person is fun though, they didn't require proof back then, but obviously you should have records and stuff available if they do ask.

You'll also need to make sure that you're under the earnings threshold of your contract. I was miles under so never had an issue with taking the moral high ground, times have changed of course, so make sure you're in the right before you become an arse like I did

I'd tick d) and send a photo of my spreadsheet/records/notes/whateveryouuse and say they can come visit for further info.

I have had this problem for 5 years now. I have always written back saying I am supported by my Mrs and my annual income is therefore less than the figure required in order to make repayments.

I have never had any problems with this response. If you mention gambling some jobsworth at the Loans Company will want more details. Remember, nobody wins gambling. ;)

If it's from the Student Loans Company then, erm, I'm afraid it is. Give it a little thought.

Legal fact is that they can never have you in court for the student loans. You could tell them to go feck themselves and they couldnt do anything

i had this letter 2 months ago. just said i was living off savings didn't mention gambling.

i am still awaiting their reponse. i may just set up a direct debit and pay em a monthly amount to stop the interest accumulating and keep em off my back.

oh and you have to love this labour government.

if you choose to claim every benifit possible under the sun you wont hear from the SLC.

but if you choose to support yourself entirely from gambling you get hounded like some criminal.

got to love the uk

Is it really wise to mention gambling at all (?) If the objective is to get them off your back,
tell 'em you are living off savings and help from parents. Mention gambling
and they are likely to hound you for proof so maybe not the best option.

Thinly disguised thread I'm supporting myself gambling, aren't I clever .
If you are and you can prove it, then tell them so.
If you're not, as I suspect, then just tell tem how you survive.
Just always tell the truth in all such matters.
Then nothing can come back to bite you.

I received a letter from the taxman about 2 years ago requesting to know how I was surviving in the world with no income , I responded by saying I would not be claiming anything from the state and gave them written permission to check all my bank statements if required on-going , did also add that I wouldn't be expecting to hear from them again.

Heard nothing since.

I know it's too late now, but I would assume that you could have told them you are unemployed and let that be the end of it?

Seeing as you are not required to inform the taxman about gambling winnings, I would very much doubt that it's necessary to inform the SLC.

It's impossible to describe what a horrible bunch of invasive bar stewards these people are. They once told me to prove I had no money (which was the truth) and didn't understand my point when I told them to buy me a ticket up to Glasgow and I would bring it up and show them.

Had I been signing on the dole, which I refused to do, I'd have been fine.

Yes, you've got to love a place where anyone without an income is given benefits and some people, like gamblers, who never do useful work aren't taxed on the income that they do have and are not required to repay money borrowed from their fellow citizens.

If you're unhappy with your job, can you just leave it and stop taking it out on the rest of the world. Whatever it is that you're doing that you've justified as useful, it's entirely your choice, so stop being so bitter.

FWIW there's no such thing as useful work. In four billion years time the sun will expand and engulf the inner planets rendering all jobs equally meaningless. Until then, should I be so lucky to live that long, I intend to do stuff that I find less tedious than other stuff.

As a patron of a betting site, you've almost certainly had a bet... with a gambler... who spent hours creating the market so that you could have your entertainment when you get home from doing whatever meaningful job it is you think you do.

Lori is a top poster on here but I'm not sure what is so amazing about that post to be honest.

I'm sure the professional gamblers (even though they spend hours on here creating markets for our benefit) have time to read the rules when they place a bet so I don't see why they should be so offended by the small print of a loan at a very agreeable interest rate. All they want you to do is prove you aren't dodging the terms of the loan. Seems reasonable to me.

It's the small print that the SLC company insist on breaking via all means neccessary. That's the problem.

As a winning gambler, we wreck families, homes and even on occasion cost lives all in the name of entertainment for the victim (and a nice curry for the gambler)

Legitimately not paying back a loan while equally legitimatelyly dodging tax (and in many cases, soap) isn't likely to keep many awake at night.

I was replying to the unlovely Didcot who blamed Labour and criticised the UK because people stuck on benefits aren't required to pay back a student loan but people who earn a living gambling are required to pay their debts.

I've no objection to anyone living by gambling (wish I could) but I do object to spongers wasting taxpayers' money on a degree that's never used and refusing to pay back the beer money they borrowed.
By:

new labour have herded more and more young people into further education. this has led to degrees being devalued, and too many graduates for the jobs market.

not using your degree that you were conned into thinking you needed, but ultimately worked hard for is rarely the graduates choice. it certainly wasnt mine.

after spending 4 years of my life getting a degree, and 2 years in a fruitless search to use it in the economic wasteland where i live, all the time seeing my debt grow... i wont cry myself to sleep that my gambling income is not declarable.

neither here nor there. i will pay back my student loan eventually. that's for sure (and the interest is accumulating fast, contary to popular opinion). the fact is I AM NOT ENTITLED to pay it back yet cause i aint earning.

i dont intend to gamble for the rest of my puff. i will work eventually, and then pay it back.

i object to bitter, toffee nosed**s like you who are of the opinion that you are subsidising my life. object to the dole scroungers, and fake incapacity benifit claiments. they are the ones you are subsidising.

no you are putting words into my mouth. i have no problem with (genuine) benifit claiming citizens not paying the loan back. i do odject to a country that makes signing on preferable to getting a low paid job, and a country that hounds the people whi try to do the right thing and not sign on when they don't need to, ie gamblers.

i hope i don't pay a penny in tax till the tories get in again. i'd like to think they will sort this sponging mentality out but i wont hold my breath.

anyway, out on the lash. bye bye

The fact is that if the rest of your education was absorbed as well as your English then it was wasted. You're the one refusing to pay your loan and yet you had a go at the poor devils on benefits. Now you've attacked the disabled.

You're a real keyboard warrior, aren't you? Have a nice time in the wine bar and try not to spill anyone's drink.

From experience I have an inkling that most people who support themselves financially through gambling alone don't sign on because the hassle isn't worth it. I strongly doubt it's because they are being altruistic and feel that they are benefiting society by not doing so as you seem to be implying.
