Personally, I like to make sure that I will not lose my stake if the team I have backed loses its lead but I must admit that many times the price seems to be too high (fortunately, simply laying the leader is just one option among many others). However, I am not sure whether your generalization is valid because there are other psychological factors as well which point into the other direction. If you have some statistics which supports it that would be interesting

Edison, good post and I agree with you. Generally speaking I would favour backing the leader for the reasons given, that is the scramble to ''green up'' favours the backer rather than the layer but I have no evidence to back that view. :(
