laying 3 /4 year olds in january against older horses can reward the layer very handsomely with the correct staking plan .
Report nathanrh January 9, 2010 4:33 PM GMT
Best advice I could probably give (without typing out about 10 lessons I've learned expensively) is to find your own style of betting and retain sensible control of your staking, with luck and over a period of time you *might* be lucky and find that your method has an edge in the market.

Otherwise, enjoy your betting and expect to lose (at best to commission only) in the longer term.

Report Hayden January 10, 2010 10:22 PM GMT
best advice would be to consider carefully who you take advice from , on betfair 96% are long term losers v 4% actually win money , also only 4% of the customer base actually post on the forum so anything you read and wonder whether to follow is a similar task to dodging raindrops in a thunderstorm.

Identify a member of the 4% winners club and ignore the forum advice and you've cracked it , in summary that means if you can't fathom selections out for yourself withdraw your funds and find another hobby less expensive.

BETFAIR COMM/PREMIUM CHARGES
Report no moves January 10, 2010 11:42 PM GMT
As I understand it premium charge doesn't kick in until youve made 10 grand on here and I am sure he would be happy to make the ten grand then he could worry about premium charge.

Of course commision has to be taken into consideration but are you saying it is impossible to find bookmakers offering in exceess of 5% higher prices than betfair on some markets because that is just incorrect.
Report aye robot January 11, 2010 8:05 AM GMT
The existance of premium charge proved that it CAN be done. It does reduce profits a little bit but ultimatly premium charge payers are all winners- otherwise they wouldn't be paying.

My advice to anyone coming on here for the first time is get yourself some good trading software, learn to trade a market you know quite a bit about, small stakes at first until you get to grips with it, then gradually increase your stakes when you are confident you can trade on here and make a profit.
Report no moves January 11, 2010 10:01 PM GMT
So your advice is GOODGUY? Errrr............ trade and and make a profit. Just one question GOODGUY........how? Its like somebody saying buy a lottery ticket and before you part with your money find a system of finding the right numbers and then you'll win.

You haven't suggested an edge for him to follow in fact you have in my opinion ducked the question; really all you have said is find a profitable way of laying then keep following it, but that surelly is his question what is this profitable way of gambling.

You suggest automated gambling is the way ahead but one contributor on here recently remarked if you don't have a value edge to your betting automated bets may only allow you to put losers on more rapidly.
Report goodguy January 12, 2010 9:57 PM GMT

Where did I mention Laying in my post. I'm a day trader and it took me over 18 months to learn how to trade on here and make a good living. Forget backing or laying, unless you know your market inside out, very few do on here. I trade the UK horse racing markets before the off, I don't need my horse to win, or lose, it doesn't matter, all I need to do is trade small movements in price and that is an art you need to learn to be successful.

As I said in my last post, download some software, bettrader Evolution is what I use, its a great piece of kit, trade very small and if you find you are good at it, then and only then increase your trading stakes. Watch some of the trading videos at racing traders, this may help you.
Report FunBob January 12, 2010 11:38 PM GMT
If it's trading software you need, the novice punter\trader should download http://www.geekstoy.com/

It's fast, lightweight, highly configurable and FREE. Also, the forum is a happy, friendly place.

All the cash saved in monthly subs can go towards a bigger bank.
