Many papers have ratings years ago the Dandy and Beeno had some comic to do the ratings .... but the BEST ratings are The Offical Ratings ... why cause The Jockey Club have a team of handicapers who know the game inside out ... Lead by Phil Smith Senior Handicaper ..... and he aint no mug ..

Take The Racing Post RP Ratings ... they differ many times with the Official ratings . before the race .. But take a look at the results of that race .. you will soon see whos the best .....

Phil Smith is ex RPR (or Postmark in those days)

I'm still seeking contact with a forumite who downloads all the ratings ...thanks in advance

The official ratings are more like a moving average whilst the RP ratings show performance by race. Matter of opinion whether their best within last 12 months is better than say last rating or best of last 3 etc.

Collateral ratings in any event are at best a metric of PAST performance. What we all seek is a measure of what FUTURE performance might be.

The Official ratings may have difficulty predicting the winner of a handicap race.

Moon light The offical rating aint there to pick winners .. they are there to see fair play .... in a 10 horse race . a 10 way dead heat will do .. will never happen .. trouble is a lot of trainers ** ... but sooner or later the offical catches up .. and the nag will never win again .... take that to racing for change . thats why the kids dont wont to know about the horse racing game .

Moon light take this 2.30 wolver The Glamour Cat .. second time ia H/C rated 62 12/1 shot in the racing post 15/1 on here early ... won in a canter .... what chance have the ratings boys got ... and the average punter .......... none

Not really a thread about the efficacy of ratings .. just obtaining them historically ......would be grateful, regards

Bit confused about The Glamour Cat though Zipper, which is toprated by 6 clear points by Topspeed, and joint second rated (76 75 75 75) by RPR

Just the sort of betting opportunity you'd be looking for using ratings!

Starfish You maybe right Zip just had another look at that H/C the g cat first time Official rated was 67 fin 9th of 10 at 33/1 so droped 5 lbs to 62 ... bear in mind this race was for 51 to 65 ... if it had been left on its mark of 69 welll it could not have run in this race ...... so us tissue boys got it very wrong . well done to you .
