1 if you'd paid that much commission, it would take forever for your points to go below 100.
2 how hard is it to rustle up 100 free points? most pointless rant ever. |
By:
1. I didn't say I had paid millions. If you haven't bet for a year your points will be around 1/5,000'th of what they were a year ago so the guy in question would've neded around half a million points 52 weeks ago for 100 to survive.
2. The hypothetical guy has been bankrupted and is now on the dole but he dreams of a comeback and likes to do research. He'd need to place around 3K of bets (which he just doesn't have) to get 100 points. The ex city boys at betfair tell him to go fk himself. You think this is correct? You think e.g. that a guy who bets 1 million every year at the Cheltenham festival should only be allowed to download the data a certain number of weeks beyond that festival and if he falls on hard times he should be banned altogether from using the betfair toilets? Are you one of maggie's children? |
By:
If he's bankrupted by betting they're doing him a favour locking him out, Feck. And I'd rather my PC charges going on something worthwhile than some freeloader downloading data at my expense :)

It's a load of old bf nonesense imo.
I pay £100 per month for the API to collect a bit of real time bf data and yet would be prevented from downloading their error riddled stuff they intermitently post on the data homepage if my points expired. |

By:
I use the api to collect some price data and have a huge db of horses, spelled correctly! I have to match mine with the betfair horses. Due to random name spelllings of horse names at betfair I have to use getsilks which returns saddle cloth number. Getsilks is not available in the free api :(
By:
Muqbil, To overcome the lack of GetSilks using the free API, I get all the Colours/Form/Jockey etc from sport ing life . com. And am able to match them up to betfair with a fairly acceptable failure rate of about 1 in 1000 or less.
main differences are Apstrophe's, InitCaps etc. If you need my full set of rules let me know. |
By:
if the guy hasn't got the funds to arb himself 100 BF points, he's got no use for the data.
pointless thread. |
By:
Muqbil,
You should be able to use some regular expression functionality to allow for the various spellings that might appear (although if they misspell very badly, then this won't work). |
By:
If you're competent enough to use the API why not just screen scrape the saddle number/draw etc data using
http://uk.site.sports.betfair.com/betting/InitialMarketDataAction.do?mi=101043317 should be easy enough for you to match up the selectionId's for the extra data and only one extra call per race so unlikely to get data charges for it |
By:

pointless thread. Have you never been skint and done a bit of research so that you'll be ready when you get your next starting bank? You sound like a right silver spoon. The majority of people can't just rent out their hunting pony you know. |
By:
feck, you know I hold no candle for BF since the introduction of the PC. but this is just whinging about nothing. anybody who can't quickly rustle themselves up 100 BF points from more or less a standing start isn't going to be able to make any great use of the data anyway. ffs, it's not hard.

Enlighten me why we want to omit (& offend) people who are unable to make use of data pres?
By:
enlighten me what the point of this thread is again feck. are we supposed to feel sorry for this imaginary person because they're poor or because they're thick?
By:
All of the above. They are previous and future clients of ours and betfair are treating them like sh1te.
By:
why don't you offer these people free lessons in how to arb, feck? instead of whinging on here, do something positive to help these poor imaginary people.

Your the one doing most of the whinging pres and nobody knows why. Pointless posts.

Isn't 100 points just £10 of commission (or implied commission)? Which is £200 of bets. How much are 100 £2 bets going to cost? £40 if you're very unlucky? We're not exactly talking big bucks.
By:
BF logic on this one simply doesn't make sense. Anyone can use the free api provided they have an active bf a/c but are prevented from downloading a few mb's of data.
Newbies who might want to do some analysis without having to learn how to clock up 100 points in order to get a look at some very basic data might certainly think twice about using the site imho. |
By:
It is definitely petty Muqbil but ridiculous when you consider someone who's paid a fortune in commission could be affected.
By:
Feck,
As someone has already pointed out, though, anyone who has paid a fortune in commission is going to know how to rustle up 100 points risk free. |
By:
Are they Contrarian? That sounds like the same school of thought that brought us such gems as "if you can't get your stakes on you should drip feed using a bot". Do we only want chess players on betfair?
By:
Ok, I'll qualify that slightly: anyone who has paid a fortune in commission and has any use whatsoever for the BF historical data (ie. not some mindless fool who has just been splashing lots of cash around all over the place) will know how to make 100 points risk free (how to do it has been explained on this forum often enough in connection with the PC).
By:
But why should they have to jump through god knows how many hoops to clock up 100 points to look at some basic data?
Simply saying 'anyone who doesn't know how to clock up 100 pts' etc is just daft. I have been on here many years and without going to a lot of effort would not know the easiest way to clock 100 points risk free. I would have thought users with no intention of placing any bets hammering the servers through the free api should be restricted more than those wanting to download old data, that is presumably on an altogether seperate server? |
By:
Not everyone reads the forum and the original comment applies equally to someone who's lost a fortune on betfair and never paid any commission.

Can someone explain to me what the points system means on here? How does it work?
By:
What's wrong with that?
Nothing if you think betfair should only be for computer programmers and the like. If I ran betfair I'd have an interface that would allow big hitting mugs to enter large bets in a oner without making the market move away from them as opposed to one that suits contribute nothing parasites. |
By:
Do you mean that the prices would be displayed but no related money/volume info ?
