google as much info as you can from whats coming up on your screen... at a guess i'd say the virus is written to react like that to deter you installing anti-virus but see what information you get by googling

Also if you get no joy whatsoever you can sign up for a trial of the service offered by m i c r o s o f t.

Visit their site and hunt around. I can't remember what it's called now, but I had them helping me online and over the phone sort out my pc.

Hate to say this, but your computer will probably run better with a virus on it, than with Norton on it!! ;)

I've cleaned up a lot of friends/neighbours computers for them and NEVER used anything other than the free downloads from the internet. Biggest problem I had was with one with Norton on it. Could not get rid of one nasty, which it turns out Norton was protecting. I removed Norton and the problem went soon after.

Are you sure you have a 'virus'? Did something you already had on your computer say you did? You can often get these pop-ups while surfing the internet that tell you you have a problem. Thing is, if you didn't instal that program to look for viruses, the chances are it's a spoof program and you have no virus. (using term virus in it's widest form. Any sort of malware really)

Malcolm -agreed about Norton, it is worse than useless.

Try this for a free online scan. It's not the quickest tool, but it's always up to date. Actually, I see it's a newer version since I last used it myself, so maybe it's got quicker.

Hate to say this for anyone who has parted with good money for Norton, but years ago, it was the tool to use. Now just lives on the name and being sold in places like PC World should tell you all you need to know. It's aimed at people who know very like about computers.

Dont see why Norton gets such a bad press myself. Their product 5/6 years ago was poor-slowed the computer right down. Their last 3 Internet security packages have been good though-certainly top end of whats available and up there with Avg, Avast, Panda, Mcafee, Kaspirsky, ect.

I think people tend to remember their previous programs and denounce them on that basis-many leading independent reviewers/magazines/websites have Norton up there with the best-must say something about them.

I got a virus last week too, I forgot how inconvenient it can be to be without my laptop. Hopefully machine back from PC World tomorrow (cost me sixty quid to have Kapersky installed by The Tech Guys!)
using sisters notebook at the moment, hopeless for betfair

what has happened in my opinion is that your norton has been corrupted

this has happened to me in the past

get rid of it if you can by uninstalling it

then try a squared dot com

works for me

Lynn,

Check out a thread called URGENT HELP PLEASE in the football forum. It was from last night and is still there. Virus related thread. Could be something useful in there for you.

Norton was overpriced rubbish and still is overpriced rubbish. I bought it years ago when i was a computer novice. I have used free systems for years since with very little trouble. I use Outpoint Free Firewall. AV Free Anti-virus. A-squared Free anti-spyware. Together with Mcafee Site Advisor and and Free Keystroke scrambler. I never have crashes nor adverts on my pc because for an equal number of years i have used Mozilla Firefox for browsing. These systems keep me safe whilst using p2p programmes to watch unlimited free football, boxing, etc.

Serves you right for paying for Norton rubbish. My wife to be this month got a virus on my laptop that kept reappearing even after I tried all sorts of tricks to rid it. I reckoned it was coming from Chikka as I wasn't using that and didnt get the virus. Anyway I uninstalled AVG and installed Microsoft Security Essentials and it found it right away although it couldn't clean it I was able to mess with the registry and System32 folder to rid it permanently. AVG in all those months hadn't detected the root virus, only the effects of it, so when I cleaned up the effects the original virus was still there hidden. So I recommends MSE over AVG anytime (and I used AVG for years).

Just to balance opinions, I use Norton 2010 and really can't fault it. Modern hi tech interface, constant pulse updates, Sonar protection which detects any unusual activity (unknown attacks), resource efficient, the only downside is the price. I use Spybot too for a weekly scan, and Adaware SE.

I've used Norton for 3 yrs now and not a hint of trouble , criticism probably unfair as if you'd had Norton in the first place you almost certainly wouldn't have got the virus , if i've read your post correctly.

Kaspersky is free if you bank with Barclays online.

Someone on Chit Chat told me so I took up the offer as my McAfee was about to expire.

use system restore to go back to a pre virus state, then install AV. that will sometimes work.
