These forums bring out the worst in people. They remind me of the Robin Williams film What Dreams May Come and the scene in Hell in which thousands of people are buried up to their necks where they spend eternity bickering with each other and wallowing in self-pity, tortured by their own self-castigation.
Then again, that could just be me.

On the whole, gamblers are trying to alter their life in some way. Whether that be by passing time by having a small bet on something to watch, or having a big bet to try and win a large amount that they will almost certainly gamble with again. So yes, they are inherently unhappy people, who find some gratification or enjoyment on occasion from having a bet.

Yes, but not from being buoyed by their success, more that an equable and consistent temperament is required to achieve it (and correcting rather than whingeing)

Alot of them are superstitious in the sense, things are purposely against them. Example; when they start losing their bets the match is supposedly fixed; match gets turned around; it then becomes a great bet by them.
Are you going to scour, quote, reference for your dissertation?

It would be an interesting topic. Generally, IMO Someonewill not subconsciously persue gambling as a result of depression, but it sure can take the buzz out of anything else in life as a result which is very damaging..Why? Because, nothing is as good as gambling.

I'm a bit long in the tooth for writing a dissertation. It's just that I've been trying to mine the forum for bits of useful lore, and finding it a depressing task. A lot of pointless bickering per useful nugget. I wondered if this was just me, or if others found it the same.

Yeah most forumites will generally ignore you aswell unless you give them the oppurtunity to mock you or act like money tree etc :) However occasionally someone will come up with team news, such as the ajax game midweek that is very useful.. they played with a full strength squad all match in the cup and won 14-1, big money couldve been made there.
So yeah, best chance is to look for the in play matches official threads and you might find something useful there!
Otherwise, http://forum.bettingadvice.com/

MoonLight, you are not going to pick up gems or insights into successful betting on here. In fact its more likely that you will gather negative impressions. You need to access forums which are genuinely inhabited by thinking successful pro punters. These kind of forums are not free but look upon them as an investment.

Punters love to be proved right. They love to take a view and have that opinion vindicated. It is their biggest buzz. The money won on a bet is a prize or trophy for being right. A profit or loss is not the major issue. If a punter can show a profit it merely gives him the ok to continue betting ( and be proved right again) Punters get depressed when they are not right or take a view that they are never going to be right on a consistent basis. They will go to any lengths to get that justification and that is why punters chase and keep gambling.

I might add that pro/successful punters are exactly the same. That is why they took up the game in the first place and continued thereafter. However they are not prepared to take under the odds for the pleasure of having their opinion justified.

Taffy is quite right, losing punters have their egos as an opponent. Until theyt realise that winning is about losing most of the time they will fail to progress.

Thanks for all the opinions. I wasn't really looking for help with betting, but with the emotional issues. It's reassuring that it isn't only me who finds this place a downer. I shall limit my exposure. Oh, and I have found useful info on here at times.

Gamblers are surely Optimistic. They like a challenge. Optimistic people rarely get depressed - just setbacks It's a fact that Racing People live longer as do Optimists.
The alternative would be the daily crossword or shopping with other half

Serious betting is a serious subject, therefore not too many laughs. I would describe myself as a serious bettor, but away from that, I am certainly not depressive.

Lets not put ourselves down here. There are some good and attractive qualities among many gamblers:
Determination (we all tell ourselves that we WILL win in the long-term)
Resilience (we keep coming back for more pain)
Studious (all that time spent studying form)
Bold/Brave (blithely putting our mortgages and childrens inheritance on the line, often several times each day)
Adventurous (see

If you are a true gambler you get as much out of losing as you do out of winning; witness the number of hard luck stories you hear (if that horse hadn't fallen, if that team had only scored, etc). It is definitely the case that menatl illness is a factor in some gamblers and the addictive/complusive nature of some people draws them to it....myself included!

Stupidity (you knew it wouldn't win but you bet just in case) Dishonesty (your other half has no idea what you punt) Impulsiveness (there must be something to bet on) Selfishness (I could do something else but I'm watching the race/match) Arrogance (I knew it would win) Greediness (every gambler) Laziness (i'll just win it) Deluded (I know my stuff and can make it pay) Tightness (all too common in gamblers!)
'Pends how you look at it. ;)
I'm just a healthy cynic, let's be honest, gambling and worthiness are not bedfellows...

my 'glass is half empty' personality (not that bad really) HELPS me big time making a consistent profit (think Sam 'Ace' Rothstein from Casino, not saying im like him but you need to be like that to be good at this game!)

Agree with your 'glass half-empty' observation and how it can help.
When you experience the pain of many bets being blown by incompetent players and officials, you cannot but view the world with a certain degree of cynicism. It's like you condition your brain to EXPECT disappointment.
